M:I’ll clear it up later.I’ve nearly finished. What do you think? W:It’s lovely.I like the roof. What a beautiful red! M:I haven’t painted the front door yet. What colour do you think it should be? W:I think green would be nice…or yellow…or perhaps blue…Oh, I don’t know.Would you like me to make some curtains for it? M:Oh, that would be great, Mum.Oh…by the way…I’m afraid I’ve got a bit of paint on the carpet over there.I’m terribly sorry. W:Oh, you haven’t, Tom! M:It’s alright.I think it will come out.If not, I’ll just paint the rest of the carpet the same colour. M:Hello, may I speak to Mrs.Brown? W:Sorry, Mum isn’t in.Who’s that speaking? M:John Smith.I work in the same school as your mother.Could you tell me when she will be back? W:I’m not sure. She left for the bank half an hour ago. Then she might go to the hospital.Ah, shall I take a message for her? M:All right, please tell her to call me when she is back.I have something important to discuss with her.And my number is 8-55-33-2-99. W:OK, so that’s 8-55-33-2-99. M:That’s great.Thank you very much. W:You are welcome. During the 1930s there was a popular song that had the title “Everything Stops for Tea” and to millions of British people a restful cup of tea is still an ideal way to relax for a few minutes from the tiredness of the day. The English custom of drinking tea has its roots in the 17th and 18th centuries. When first imported to Britain the exotic “cha”(as the Chinese tea was called)was considered a man’s drink to be enjoyed with colleagues at London coffee shops. These were popular meeting places for many walks of life-politicians, poets, actors and writers. Many London clubs began in this manner. In 1706 the first coffee house that offered tea was Tom’s Coffee House owned by Tom Twining. He realized that he needed to introduce an added attraction to compete with the other coffee houses in London. And tea was rare, exotic and extremely expensive so that it became an exclusive drink. Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to our tour. This morning, we are going to take you to some points of historical interest in the city.If you have any question, please don’t hesitate to ask. If you look out of the window on your right, you’ll see the Grange. One of the oldest buildings in the city, it was built for our first mayor 200 years ago, and still has most of the original furniture.Perhaps the most interesting thing is that every Saturday afternoon, you can come and watch them bake bread the way it was done 200 years ago. On your left is University College. This university building is just 125 years old.We will be stopping in a moment at Bridgeton Castle. The castle was built by Sir Henry Pellat for his young wife.He bought almost all of the building materials from England.Notice the beautiful glass windows.Unfortunately, Sir Henry’s young wife became ill and died before the castle was completed.Sir Henry became so unhappy that he left the castle and returned to England. No family members ever live there. W:Excuse me, where’s your manager? I want to see the manager. M:The manager? Well, I don’t see her around.Maybe I can help you. W:Yeah.Look, I’m returning this chicken. M:What’s the matter with it? W:What’s the matter with it? Look at it.It’s bad.Look at the color.I can’t make chicken soup with a chicken like this. It’s rotten. Here, smell it.Go ahead, smell it. M:I’m smelling it.I’m smelling it, lady. W:Where are your manners, anyway? And where is your boss? M:I don’t know where he is.But we have never sold such chickens. Are you mistaken? W:Mistaken? My friend told me that your shop sold the tastiest chicken in this city.So I came a long way to buy one.But I never thought Smith’s was actually that bad. M:Well, you see, that’s the problem. This is not Smith’s supermarket. We are always the best.I’m afraid you have to go across the street to Smith’s and shake the chicken in their manager’s face. M:Hi, Lucy, you are a member of the photo club, aren’t you? W:Yes, I am. M:What do you usually do in the club? W:We do a lot of things. We take photos. And sometimes, our chemistry teacher shows us how to develop the film and make prints from the negatives. M:That sounds like fun. W:And there will be a school photo competition next month.I hope I can win a prize. M:Wonderful!I want to join your club. When’s it open? W:It opens from 4∶00 to 5∶30 on Wednesdays and on Thursday afternoons, too.Can you come to the club with me tomorrow? M:Yes, let’s meet at 3∶50. |
