Yours truly  Li Ping

Dear editor,
Nowadays, there exists an increasingly severe phenomenon that teenagers don’t show respect to their parents. As we can read in newspaper or watch in TV, some teenagers quarrel with parents, some talk back and some even resort to violence. As to this problem, I’d like to offer several  proposals as follows.
Initially(First), we should realize that it’s our parents who give us lives. Without parents, we can not live in this world. Therefore, the importance of respecting our parents can not be too overemphasized. What’s more, it goes without saying that we have to remember the birth day of our parents, when we can express our gratitude to them. None the less(Meanwhile), respecting our parents should be done from every detail. Just as a proverb goes, “Piety is above all.” (百善孝为先)
To sum up, respecting parents is our traditional virtue in China. No matter how old we are, it’s a priority to respect our parents.

Years ago in Scotland Clark and his wife worked and saved, making plans for their family to travel to the United States. Finally they had saved enough money and gotten passports. The entire family were filled with excitement. However, before their departure, the youngest son was bitten by a dog. The doctor sewed up(缝合) the boy but hung a yellow sheet on the Clarks’ front door. Because of the possibility of rabies(狂犬病), they were separated for fourteen days.
The family’s dream was dashed(破灭). They would not be able to make the trip to America as they planned. The father, filled with disappointment and anger, wept bitter tears and cursed(咒骂)both his son and God for their misfortune.
Five days later, the tragic(悲剧的,悲惨的) news spread throughout Britain — Titanic, which was on her maiden(首次的) voyage on April 14,1912, had sunk, taking hundreds of lives with it. The Clark family should have been on that ship, but because the son had been bitten by a dog, they were left behind.

The Guangzhou Children’s Palace and Urbanities Growing magazine last week published the results of survey about how children and parents view thankfulness. 84% of parents think that today most children do not feel a sense of thankfulness toward their parents. 90% of the parents said that the key to teaching children to be thankful toward their parents is for parents to set a good example themselves. If parents expect their kids to be more thankful to them, they themselves should be thankful toward their kids as well as toward others.
How do children understand the idea of being thankful? Most children think that being thankful means repaying those who have supported them. 44% of the children think that they should be grateful to those who once helped them or brought them happiness; 36% of the children think that if someone helped them before, then they should do something for him or her in return; and 20% said that they should be grateful to their parents for bringing them up. 第二节 读写任务(共l小题,满分25分)
阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。
The use of advertisement is certainly great both to the producer and the consumer. There is a great deal of truth in the saying that good quality and honest workmanship are best advertisement. Of course, people know that the manufacturers would have done better if they have used the money for advertising in making better products to sell. But in these days of far-extended trade, there is no doubt that advertisement is necessary to make the existence of even first-class goods known. And even goods that are already well known must still be advertised. Some manufacturers are aware of the value of it, for, when they try to save money by stopping their advertisements, their sales go down at once.
But advertising has its abuses. Many advertisements are meant to cheat, and do at times cheat the public by raising the price of worthless goods. There is only one comfort in this aspect that a lying advertisement cannot sell worthless goods for long, for the people who buy it will not buy it a second time. As an old saying goes, “You can take in all people part of time; and you can take in some people all the time; but you cannot take in all the people all the time.

There is a real joke. When some guys were talking heatedly about “F4”in the living room, the father came in and interrupted: “Which is more powerful, F-4 or F-16?” The boys burst into laughter.Obviously, the father took F4 for a type of fighter plane. He didn’t know that F4 is a pop group extremely popular among young people these two years.
Then what does the “F” in  F4 stand for? Fever or fortune? It is certainly not “failure” for sure! We look at the success and appeal of these 4 stars from the popular drama Meteor Garden 《流星花园》,who took the island by storm during their brief visit here. For sure, they look good. Each of them being 1.80 meters tall, they are all very popular throughout the world.
But what exactly is the appeal of these 4 young guys? Nobody can tell.Maybe some of young students are just following the fashion. Then why is Meteor Garden stopped from being shown on TV in China? Well, some young people just could not agree. In fact, students are not too young to tell black from white. And they must be clear that every coin has two sides. While they find interest in F4, they must be clear what bad that drama will do us.
