The seven Cs of a good letter

What is the secret of writing a good letter? Here are two main ones. Don’t try to be complicted(复杂的). Don’t try to impress（留下深刻印象）your reader. You will be successful if you follow these seven Cs.

Clear. Use short, direct sentences. Just imagine that the reader is right there with you .Above all, don’t use an introduction.

Correct. Don’t guess, even for spelling. Refer to your dictionary. If you need to , check a reference(参考) book too. Use them as much as you need to.

Complete(完整的). Don’t scatter(使分散) our points. This is good organization too.

Courteous（礼貌的）. Be friendly rather than overly casual. Present your information nicely even if you are complaining about something . In all letters, treat others as you want them to treat you.

Concise(简洁的). Make each point as clearly and briefly as you can.

Conversational(会话的). This is really the secret of good writing. . Such a letter has a natural, friendly tone(语气). Let your personality come through naturally.

Considerate(体贴的;考虑周到的). Write about what you believe the reader needs or wants to know. Try to be helpful. This will build good feeling towards you.

The seven Cs are about writing letters. But how about school papers? Use the seven Cs. Write as if you are talking to your teacher or professor. You’ll be surprised. You’ll almost instantly become a good writer. And you might even enjoy writing from now on.

Just “talk”to the person

Think of the readers’point of view as you write.

Make them easy to understand.

Include long sentences in your letter.

Make sure what you say is correct.

Writing should not be taken too seriously.

Once again, we need people who can write good stories. The judges, who include Mary Littlejohn, the novelist, Michael Brown, the television reporter, and Susan Hitchins, the editor of Keep Writing, are looking for interesting and original stories. Detective fiction was extremely popular last year, although the competition winner produced a love story. You can write down about whatever you want but here’s some advice to start your thinking:

Write about what you know

This is the advice which every writer should pay attention to and, last year, nearly everyone who wrote for us did exactly that. Love, family, problems with friends ---- these were the main subjects of the stories. However, you need to turn ordinary situations into something interesting that people will want to read about. Make the reader want to continue reading by writing about ordinary things in a new and surprising way.

Get your facts right

It’s no good giving a description of a town or explaining how a jet engine works if you get it wrong. So avoid writing anything unless you’re certain about it.

Hold the reader’s attention

Make the beginning interesting and the ending a surprise. There is nothing worse than a poor ending. Develop the story carefully and try to think of something unusual happening at the end.

Think about the characters

Try to bring the people in your story alive for the reader by using well-chosen words to make them seem real.

Your story must be your own work, between 2,000 and 2,5000 words and typed, double-spaced, on one side only of each sheet of paper.

Even if you’re in danger of missing the closing date, we are unable to accept stories by fax or email. You must include the application form with your story. Unfortunately your story cannot be returned, nor can we discuss our decisions.

You should not have had any fiction printed in any magazine or book in this country ---- a change in the rules by popular request ---- and the story must not have happened in print or in recorded form, for example on radio or TV, anywhere in the world.

Anais Nin was a famous writer. Nin was born French-Cuban but lived in the United States in her later years of life till she died. Nin’s works had her relationships with authors，artists，and other figures as the main subject. Some of her writings were made into films. Nin was also a visiting lecturer in several colleges and promoted Women's Movement with her strong writings.

Anais Nin was born in France in 1903. Her father was a Spanish artist and a composer living in Cuba（古巴）where he met her mother, a French singer working in Cuba. As a child Nin was brought up in Spain. When her parents separated, Nin and her two brothers moved to New York with their mother. At the age of 16 Nin decided to give up studying and started to work as a dancer and model to reduce the financial burden on her mother so that her brothers could go on with their studies.

In 1923 Nin got married to her husband，Hugh Parker Guiler in Cuba. In 1924 Nin and Hugh moved to Paris where Hugh continued with his banking career and Nin started writing. Nin wrote her first book in print, D. H. Lawrence：An Unprofessional Study in 16 days. In 1939 Nin left Paris as it was a French government's request to its residents to leave Paris because of the coming war. Nin returned to New York with Hugh and sent her written books to Frances Steloff of the Gotham Book Mart in New York for safekeeping.

In 1931 Nin wrote her book Henry and June from the Unexpurgated Diary of Anais Nin. In 1936 Nin published House of Incest which was a 72-page fiction novel.

Nin also appeared and was a part of various films. In 1973 Anais Nin was awarded an honorary doctorate（荣誉博士学位）by the Philadelphia College of Art. In 1974 Nin was elected to the United States National Institute of Arts and Letters.

In 1977 Nin died in her Los Angeles home after battling with cancer for three years.
