Nearly thirty years ago, I went rock climbing for the first time with a group in New Mexico. It sounded exciting and  1! Anyone who has ever climbed knows that you can easily  2where there is no place to go, or so. It seems you’re stuck. But    3is not an option. You cannot just stand there and feel  4for yourself. You cannot go back down, so you are  5to become solution minded.

I held on for dear life that day, on my first climb,   6about three quarters of the way to the top. It seemed that there was no place to go, and  7to put my hands or feet so that I could  8upward. But after a few minutes had passed I realized that I had to do  9. I began to look again for a(n)  10. I then noticed a   11sticking out, which I might be able to grab with my hands and  12myself up to where I could have a small foothold. I called to the instructor at the top and asked him if that rock would hold my  13if I pulled myself up. I can  14remember his answer, “I don’t know. Why don’t you try it and see?”

In life we many times feel “stuck”. We wonder how we got into the  15that we are presently in. It is in those times that we need to be careful about how we define(定义)it. Have we failed,   16is it just a setback?

Setbacks, adversity(逆境), or being stuck is never an indication that you are a   17unless you decide that those things define your life as a failure. For people looking for a(n)  18to be a failure, there are always plenty to choose from. But if you want your life to be successful, setbacks, adversity and being stuck are   19stepping-stones to your success. Success minded people  20those kinds of things for what they really are. They know that for them, they are only temporary.

Dear Mark,

You may consider this an anonymous(匿名的) testimonial.

We came to your seminar(研究班) with many difficulties and near violent anger, definitely emotionally violent. After taking your course we learned and practiced many of the techniques and principles you taught in the seminar we attended last year. It not only saved our relationship but improved our individual lives. For months and months we had all your rules taped to our walls (with 3M temporary double-sided removable pad tabs) in the bathroom above the sink, on the fridge and in my office and in the utility room. They kept reminding us of the proper ways to handle conflict and it has curtailed the damaging effects of emotional escalation(扩大) that really ruined any chance to a loving peaceful life. Although we both are far from where we'd like to be, we are thousands of miles ahead of the painful place where we were before attending your course. Spending the time with you and other couples helped us see that we were not alone and encouraged us to move through this awful phase of our relationship to a happier and more satisfying relationship. We were both motivated to learn and sincerely when we came. We participated honestly and we received great rewards then and now. I believe that we have integrated your techniques into our lives to our benefit.

Thank you for your life's work and course that has helped us grow and create a relationship that is so much more satisfying and pleasant.

We appreciate your part in our lives.

Yours,

Bill & Lori

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.

People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour_the_pleasure_of_society,_offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing(批评) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.

Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not(change this bad habit), it will be good for others to avoid any contact(接触) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed-up in their quarrels.

3. We can conclude from the passage that ________.

A. we should pity all such unhappy people

B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life

C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness

D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons
