OFFICIALS in charge of China's space programme are reportedly stepping up the training of astronauts for travel in space. Two or three are expected to form the country's first group in outer space.
A large “aerospace city” in the Beijing suburb (市郊) is being used for the purpose. The complex (综合设备) is supposed to be the world's third largest centre for training humans for outer space.
According to the People's Daily, the preparations really began several years ago, in 1996, when two Chinese astronauts were sent to Moscow for training.
Today, the group in training has grown to several pilots, each with more than 1,000 hours of flight time.
They also have a master's degree in a connected field, either mathematics, physics, engineering, or biology. In general, the inexperienced astronauts put in a 10 - hour day at aerospace city.
The space research and testing equipment, which was built about six years ago, is testing a large spacecraft. It has 10 major laboratories and was the birthplace of the Shenzhou - class spaceship. The centre is actually engaged overall in a “sustainable (能保持一定速度的) spaceflight” programme. One of its major pieces of equipment is the world's fifth largest vacuum chamber (真空室), used to test the flight - worthiness of Shenzhou vehicles (运载火箭).
