Kim Jong-il (16 February 1941- 17 December 2011) was the supreme leader of North Korea from 1994 to 2011. The presenter in North Korean state television announced that he had died on 17 December at 08:30 of a heart attack while travelling by train to an area outside Pyongyang. Kim Jong-il's funeral was scheduled for 28 December in Pyongyang with a mourning period lasting until the following day. After the death was announced, the South Korean military was put on high alert. President Lee Myung-Bak canceled the rest of his Monday schedule and stated that "For the sake of the future of the Republic of Korea, peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula is more important than anything else. "
