MySpace, the social networking website, is different from other websites which only provide stories about other people.MySpace is a place that allows you to broadcast your own stories and personal information to as many people as you like.Started two years ago, it is a big source of information for and about American kids.

Teenagers and their parents feel very differently about it.Teens are rushing to join the site, not sharing their parents’worries. It signals yet another generation gap in the digital era.

For teenagers, it is reliable network to keep in touch with their friends. They will often list their surnames, birthdays, after–school jobs, school clubs, hobbies and other personal information.

“MySpace is an easy way to reach just about everyone.I don’t have all the phone numbers of my acquaintances. But if I want to get in touch with one of them, I could just leave them a message on MySpace,”said Abby Van Wassen. She is a 16–year–old student at Woodland Hills High of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Parents on the other hand are seriously concerned about the security problems of MySpace.

“Every time we hold a parents meeting, the first question is always about My Space,”said Kent Gates, who travels the country doing Internet safety seminars(研讨会).The National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children has received at least 288 MySpace–related complaints, according to Mary Beth Buchanan, a lawyer in Pittsburgh.

“Your profile on MySpace shows all your personal information to anyone on the Web.And MySpace even lists this information by birthplace and age. It’s like a free checklist for trouble–makers and it endangers children,”Buchanan said.

Congratulations! You are Times person of the year!

Previous winners have included Adolf Hitler, Bill Gates and Ayatollah Khomeini. This year it is you.

Time magazine has named”You”as its”Person of the Year”in recognition of the way that ordinary internet users have revolutionized the media through blogs, file-sharing and websites such as Wikipedia, YouTube and MySpace. The magazine designed special cover——a white keyboard with a mirror for a computer screen where buyers can see their reflection——for the issue, reflecting the importance of user-generated(使用者自创)Internet content as a driving force in the modern world.

User-generated content on websites such as You Tube has proved the latest twist(转折)in the Internet revolution. You Tube has attracted millions of users and earned its founders $1.65 billion when it was bought by Google earlier this year.

Normally, the magazine describes its person of the year not necessarily as an honor, but as”the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and represented what was important about the year”.Mr.Stengel said in an interview that to select the”Person of the Year”is to look for someone who’s a symbol.

The magazine did cite(提名)26”People Who Mattered”, from North Korean leader Kim Jong II to Pope Benedict XVI(教皇本笃十六世)to the troika(三人组合)of President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld in the past. And in 2005, the winners were Bill and Melinda Gates and rock star Bono, who were cited for their charitable(慈善的)work aimed at reducing global poverty and improving world health. It was not the first time that the magazine went away from naming an actual person for its”Person of the Year”.In 1966, the 25-and-under generation was cited; in 1975, American women were named; and in 1982, the computer was chosen.

Most parents love the Internet and want their kids to use it.But a new survey in America finds that parents also fear the online world-especially social networking sites such as MySpace, and worry their kids will get in trouble with people they meet.

“The parents see the Web’s great potential, and they know their kids have to be there,”says James Steyer, CEO of Common Sense Media, which released results from a survey that looked into parental attitudes toward the Internet.“It’s also what they are scared of most.”

The study was conducted online 5-10 May by Insight Research Group. It says 80% of parents are concerned about kids meeting bad people online. That’s because young people who largely have grown up with the Net think of it as a social outlet, say the researchers. To young people, the benefits of giving out some personal information to reach out to friends outweigh the risks. And, the study shows they are so comfortable with the medium that 78% have a personal website or blog.

Parents also recognize the importance of the Internet. The survey shows 91% think the Net helps their children explore their passions, and 77% think the Internet is one of the most valuable education tools teens have. But 88% think it’s important to know what their kids are doing online.

Findings suggest both parents and teens need more education about using online media, Steyer says.

Internet safety has become an increasing concern for parents in America.Organisations like the non-profit Common Sense have been trying to reach and help parents pay attention to the problem.

As high school students flock to social networking sites, campus police are scanning their Facebook and mySpace pages for tips to help break up fights, monitor gangs and prevent crime.

Some students object to police looking over their shoulders. But officers responsible for school safety say routine checks of the online forums often add to the knowledge they obtain from hallways or schoolyards.

In recent years, school administrators have blamed some campus fights on Internet conflicts and urged parents to keep watch on their children’s computer activity. But students who use the Web to let their 500 closest friends know what they are doing at all times are sometimes surprised that police are watching, too.

Police don’t have special privileges on Facebook or MySpace.Students who want to go unobserved can change privacy settings so that their profiles are displayed only to a list of approved people. But the default(默认)settings leave those profiles open to many Internet users(in the case of Facebook)or all of them(in the case of MySpace).

Employers and college admission counselors have examined online profiles of student applicants for some time.Police across the country have been doing the same for the past two or three years, said kevin Quinn, a spokesman for the Minnestota-based National Association of School Resource Officers.

“If you are already familiar with the technology, it doesn’t take you but a couple of minutes to hook into the student population and keep an eye on things,” Quinn said.

An expedition into a thicket(丛林)of MySpace profiles found high school students discussing drugs, sex and fights. It was all publicly available(although in language that caused a reporter to blush).

Late last month, Fairfax County police announced the arrests of seven Chantilly area teenagers for trying to recruit Franklin Middle School students to a gang. That investigation was aided when a student showed the school resource officer gang symbols littering one of the suspect’s MySpace profiles.

Fairfax police say they pride themselves on addressing issues in schools before they develop into major problems.Keeping an eye on Facebook and MySpace has become an extra tool in that effort, they said.

Capturing the Memories
Almost everyone has heard of MySpace.com.It allows friends to connect with each other. But did you ever wonder where the idea for this website came from? It is modeled after high school yearbooks.
A yearbook is a book used to record memories of a specific class. For example,I graduated from Manchester West High School in 2001.My yearbook is dedicated(献给) to my senior class. In this book you will find a picture of all my classmates.
Alongside your picture, you can put a quote that is important to you.Next to the quote and your photo is a list of your school and sports activities.Later in the book are pages dedicated to teams and organizations. For example, the girls football team has a page of pictures and memories.
After you receice the yearbook, you go around and have your friends sign it and write letters to you. This will remind you about the many adventures you had with your friends. Although, 40 years ago,a girl wrote a loving message in my father's yearbook but when he showed me it,he didn't remember who the girl was!
But the yearbook is the final memory for seniors,so it will often be the one reminder of your high school years that you carry with you throughout life.In my mother's yearbook she still has, pressed between the pages, the flower her date gave her at her senior prom. That was in 1967.
High school is a magical time.It is when we experience many of the important moments of your lives. Our first kiss.Driving for the first time. Our first big success.Out first major hearbreak.Unlike MySpace, which can constantly be updated,a yearbook captures these special moments in our lives and holds on to them forever so that we may never forget.Because, honestly , we will never want to.

Social networking isn’t only for the under 40s. More than 25 percent of Americans 50 years and older stay connected using sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, according to new research.

“The latest data tells us that more and more social networking is becoming a part of everyday life for Americans 50 plus,” said Kevin Donnellan, the chief communications officer at AARP, which released the report.

Nearly a quarter of older Americans are on Facebook and 73 percent said they use it to stay in touch with relatives, but not just their children and grandchildren. “They are using the Internet to keep up with the world and the people who are important to them,” said Jean Koppen, the author of the report. She added that older adults are also on Facebook to stay connected, not only with their family, but with their friends and those in the same age group. Almost 50 percent of older adults were introduced to the social networking sites by a family member, mainly a child or grandchild. “Just under one-fifth of adults aged 50 and older say they do not use the Internet,” according to the report.

The findings are based on a telephone survey of 1,863 adults. In addition to keeping up on Facebook and Twitter older adults are aware of the latest technology. Eighty-three percent had heard about the Apple iPad and 11 percent intended to buy one.

Despite the popularity of the Internet among the over 50s, they still mostly go to print newspapers and magazines for news. Only one percent said they followed blogs.
