When you watch TV programs about wild animals, it is surprising to see how an antelope can escape a lion's attackIn the wilderness, everyone has a stunt(绝招)

Even plants have their own ways of fighting off enemies

Over millions of years of evolution, plants have developed a unique defence system(独特的防御系统)Chemicals are wildly used for survivalBy making their leaves, flowers, roots and fruits distasteful or poisonous to enemies, plants can fight back

One such plant is the Golden Wattle tree(金合欢树)British scientists David Cameron has found that when an animal eats the tree's leaves, the amount of poison increases in the other leaves.“It's like the damaged leaves telephoning the others and telling them to fight together against the enemy,” he said

The tree also sends defence messages to neighbouring plants by giving out a special smellOther Golden Wattle trees within a distance of 45 meters will get the message and produce more poison within 10 minutesNow, if an enemy eats too many of the trees' leaves, it will die

Every species of plant or tree is good at producing a particular set of chemicalA herbivore that can survive after eating the leaves of one tree may be poisoned by its neighbor

In this way, plants have developed not only individual defence systems, but also shared it with others, which makes it impossible for a single animal to destroy even a small area of forest

One bitterly cold day, a snowstorm blew into our area.Needing firewood, I quickly set out with my best friend, Bruce, to look for a tree to cut down.I was glad to have Bruce along.Cutting down a tree in a snowstorm can be dangerous. So it was important to have a friend who could warn me of dangers.

When I chose a big 23-meter-tall tree and prepared to cut it down, my best friend suddenly warned me,“Don’t cut down that tree! It’s too close to the power line!”I wasn’t sure about it.So I decided to disregard his warning.I wanted to finish the job quickly and go home.So I began cutting down the tree. When the tree fell, there was no longer any doubt whether my friend was right.

The tree caught the power line, bringing it to the ground.I considered cutting the tree off the line. After all, electricity can’t travel through wood, so I could safely remove the tree.As I reached out my finger to touch the tree, pain ran up my arm and through my head.I had been shocked!

After I returned home and told my mother what had happened, she quickly called the power company.Workers from the power company soon arrived on the scene. One of them asked if I had touched the tree, and when I told him I had, his face turned pale.

“You should have been killed,”he said.

So why am I still alive? It was my boots that saved my life.

Within two hours, the workers removed the tree.Soon the snowstorm calmed down-but not my mother.

Even though she was glad I wasn’t hurt, my mother was still serious with me.After all, I shouldn’t have brushed off my friend’s warning.

Through this experience, I learned it’s important to listen to people who offer a different perspective.Taking the time to listen might actually save a lot of time and trouble. It certainly would have kept me from getting the“shock of my life.”

阅读下面的短文(小孩和树玩的寓言故事),然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree.A little boy loved to come and play around it every day.He climbed to the tree top, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow…He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him.

Time went by…The little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree.

One day, the boy came back to the tree and looked sad.“Come and play with me,”the tree asked the boy.

“I am no longer a kid, I don’t’ play around trees anymore.”The boy replied,“I want toys.I need money to buy them.”“Sorry, but I don’t have money…but you can pick all my apples and sell them. So, you will have money.”The boy was so excited. He picked all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy didn’t come back after he picked the apples. The tree was sad.

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited.“Come and play with me.”The tree said.“I don’t have time to play.I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?”“Sorry, but I don’t have a house. But you can cut off my branches to build your house.”So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left happily.

The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy didn’t appear since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted.“Come and play with me!”the tree said.

“I am sad and getting old.I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?”“Use my trunk to build the boat. You can sail and be happy.”So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat.He went sailing and did not show up for a long time.

Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years.“Sorry, my boy.But I don’t’ have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you.”the tree said.“I don’t have teeth to bite.”The boy replied.“No more trunk for you to climb on.”“I am too old for that now.”the boy said.“I really want to give you something…the only thing left is my dying roots.”The tree said with tears.“I don’t’ need much now, just a place to rest.I am tired after all these years.”The boy replied.“Good!Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest.Come here, please sit down with me and have a rest.”The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears…

This is a story of everyone. The tree is our parent. When we were young, we loved to play with Mom and Dad…When we grow up, we leave them, and only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they could to make you happy. You may think that the boy is cruel to the tree but that's how all of us are treating our parents.
