moved to the big city about three months earlier. It was one week before Christmas and I was going
home on the last streetcar of the evening.
   I remember looking at my paycheque(工资单) and asking myself how it was going to endure. At
that time in my life I hardly had enough money to exist on. Bread for supper and oatmeal for breakfast
was the only way I kept hunger at bay.
   I got off the streetcar and started walking up the street, when I suddenly noticed a man was running
after me. I stopped, turned around, seeing that he was black. I snapped, "What do you want?" The man
answered in a soft voice, "I am returning your wallet. You left it on the streetcar seat."
   Because of that man's thoughtfulness, I was allowed the comfort of going home by bus for the summer
holidays. Otherwise, I would have stayed alone in my small room with a hog plate.
   I have never been so ashamed of myself, and that poor, kind man had to walk, who knows how far,
home.
   I recognized immediately that this was wrong of me and it changed my ways forever.

In the 1930's, a lot of people in the USA were out of work. Among these people was a man named Alfred Butts. He always has an interest in word games and so, to fill his time, he planned a game which he called“Lexico”. However, he was not completely satisfied with the game, so he made a number of changes to it and, in time, changed its name from“Lexico”to“Alph”and then to“Criss·Cross”. He wanted to make some money from his new game, but he didn't have any real commercial（商业性的）success.

　　In 1939, Butts happened to meet a man called Jim Brunot who showed an interest in the new game. The two men worked together on developing the game and in 1984 it was offered for sale in the United States under its new name--“Scrabble”.

　　At first, it didn't sell very well. In the first year it sold just 2,250 sets and by 1951 it had only reached 8,500sets a year.

　　Then, in 1952 the manager of Macy's department store in New York, Jack Strauss, happened to play“Scrabble”while he was on holiday. He thought it was a wonderful game and, when the went back to work after his holiday, he insisted that Macy's should stock（储备）the game and make an effort to call the public's attention to it.

In 1752, three years after two Scotsmen, Alexander Wilson and Thomas Melville, fastened thermometers to kites to record the temperature of clouds, Benjamin Franklin made his famous experiment with a kite, a string, and a key．Franklin hoped to show that nature’s tremendous displays of electricity in lightning were the same thing as the feeble electric sparks scientists of the day were producing in their laboratories．He built a square kite to which he attached an iron wire．He flew the kite with a hemp string(麻线), and near the base of the string he tied a large brass key．The kite rose into a dark thundercloud, where the iron wire picked up electrical charges．Franklin noticed that the strands of the string(绳串)were beginning to stand up with electricity．As rain wet the string, it conducted more electricity．Standing in the shelter of a shed, Franklin cautiously reached out his finger to touch the brass key．A series of sparks jumped from the key to his finger．He thus proved that lightning and electricity are the same．We now know that this experiment was a dangerous one, for Franklin might have been killed by a bolt of lighting．
