Text 2 W: The study with all those bookshelves would be very useful. M: And here is the kitchen with a large table and fridge as well. Text 3 W: This game is so exciting. What is the time? M: It's 3:40. There are only 20 minutes before it's finished. Text 4 M: Excuse me. These knives I bought here yesterday are not all the same. This one is different. W: Oh, I see what you mean. I'm sorry, I didn't notice it. M: Thank you very much. Text 5 W: What should we do this weekend? And don't suggest going to a baseball game. M: I thought you loved baseball. W: I do. But that's all we ever did. Let's do something different. M: All right. How about tennis? W: That's a good idea. Text 6 M: I'd like to congratulate you on your wonderful performance. W: Thank you very much, sir. M: I read about you in the newspaper and decided to come and hear you play. I've travelled many miles and I'm very glad I made the effort. You played the piano so beautifully, and what are your next plans? W: At present I'm giving a lot of concerts. Fortunately people want to come and hear me play, but I'm getting very tired of travelling. M: Why do you have to work so hard? W: I'm planning to start a school, so I'm trying to save as much money as possible. M: What kind of school? W: A music school for disabled children. I think they have the right to receive education like healthy children. At the moment there are very few such schools in my country. Unfortunately it will cost a lot of money. M: But I think a lot of people will support you, and I'm sure your wish will come true. Text 7 W: What a nice, quiet place away from all those people. Now tell me what's bothering you. M: Great. I need to get this off my chest. I'm having problems living with Mike, my roommate. We seldom talk to each other. And when we do, it's to fight. W: I knew you two were having problems, but I didn't know that things were so bad. What started it all? M: Well, it started when we first moved in. I had a lot of things, and Mike wasn't pleased when he saw that. W: So where did you find the room for all your things? M: I put them in the cupboard in the living- room. This made him really unhappy because he wanted to put his suitcase in there. W: Was that the only problem? M: Oh, no. I like a neat, orderly house, but Mike is so careless. His part of the house is always dirty. You know we share living space, such as the kitchen, living room, bath etc. W: Have you tried to talk with him about this? M: I've tried, but he then starts shouting at me about how my friends are always coming over when he has a lot of work to do. I don't know what to do. W: You might talk with him again in a friendly way. Just say that you will not bring your friends over unless you get his permission first. But he will have to promise to keep the house tidy. M: That just might work. Thanks for the advice. Text 8 M: Is that the box - office? W: Yes? M: The opera next week. I'd like four tickets for Wednesday. W: In the daytime or evening? M: Oh, evening. W: You said four tickets? M: That's right. What prices are they? W: $ 2.50, $ 1.50, and $ 1.00. Sorry, no. There aren't any one - dollar ones left. M: Where are the one - dollar - fifty - cent seats? W: Well, they'll be at the end of the row, I'm afraid. Obviously the centers of the rows go first. I have got Row No. 26 - 29, or 1 - 4. In fact, if you wouldn't mind sitting two and two, there are some central ones. Row K16 and 17, and Row M19 and 20. M: No, I think we'd like to sit together. It will have to be the two - dollar - fifty seats, I suppose. W: In that case, you'll be five rows back. M: That sounds fine. Thank you. W: Could you pick the tickets up by next Monday, please? M: That's OK. Thank you. Text 9 M: I think we're going to miss the train. Must we go to slowly? W: Yes, we must. As they say, “It's better to be safe than sorry.” M: What does that mean? W: It means we don't want to have an accident. M: Mary, I think you miss the turn. W: No, Grandpa. There are still four or five blocks to go. Then we have to turn right. M: Doesn't Ellen always turn next to the school? W: Sometimes, Grandpa. But that's a slow way to go. We're in a hurry. M: Oh, no! There's another traffic light ahead. I hope the light stays green. M: Oh, no! There it goes. A red light and we have to stop for green light. M: Do you think we'll make it to the station in time? W: I don't know. How long will we wait at this light? What time do you have, Grandpa? M: Ten minutes to three. W: Oh no! I don't think we're going to make it. Bad luck! Text 10 When you take a walk in any of the cities in the West, you often see a lot of people walking with dogs. It is still true that the dog is the most useful and faithful animal in the world. But the reasons why people keep a dog have changed. In the old days people used to train dogs to protect themselves against attacks by other beasts. And later they came to realize that a dog was not only useful for a protection but willing to obey his master. For example, when people used dogs for hunting, the dogs wouldn't eat what was caught without permission. But now people in a city need not protect themselves against attacks from animals. Why do they keep dogs then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from thieves. But the most important reason is for companionship. For a child, a dog is his best friend when he has no friends to play with. For young couples, a dog is their child when they have no children. For old couples, a dog is also their child when their real children have grown up. So the main reason why people keep dogs has changed from protection to friendship. |
