He pulled something from underneath the chair.
"Go to open it! I was going to wait until your birthday, but I can't wait1” Slowly, Rachel lifted the top of the 15. Laid out in front of him were all of the quarters from his coin collection. Each quarter was in its own 16in a new collection case.  Each quarter shone like it was new.
Rachel felt 17rush over his neck and ears. He18said, “Thank you this means...a great deal to me.” He was grateful that Eric had cut him 19before he said something he would  20. Eric was exactly the type of person he wanted as a friend !

One night recently, I was driving down a two-lane highway at about 60 miles an hour. A car approached from the 1direction at about the same speed. As we 2each other, I caught the other driver’s eye for only a second.  I wondered whether he might be 3 as I was, how dependent we were on each other at that moment. I was relying on him not to fall4 not to be put off by a phone conversation, not to cross over into my lane and bring my life to a sudden5. Though we had 6spoken a word to each other, he relied on me in just the same way.
Multiplied a million times over, I believe that is the way the world7 At some 8, we all depend upon one another. Sometimes that dependence requires us9 not to do something like crossing over the double yellow line. And sometimes it requires us to act 10, with friends or even with 11.
As technology12our world, the need increases for cooperative action among nations. In 2003, doctors in five nations were quickly organized to identify the SARS virus, which 13thousands of lives. The threat of international terrorism has shown itself to be a14 problem, one requiring coordinated action by police and intelligence forces across the world’ We must recognize that our fates are not ours15to control.
In my own life, I’ve put great stock in 16responsibility.17 , as the years have passed, I’ve also come to believe that there are moments when one must rely upon the good faith and judgment of18 So, while each of us faces the case of driving alone down a19road, what we must learn is that the approaching light may not be a threat, but a shared moment of20.

It was 20 years ago. I was driving home with my 4-year-old son. Traffic was light. I was singing quietly along 1 the song playing on the radio. I2at the intersection(交叉路口) and looked both ways. The road was 3. I slowly started to make a right turn when suddenly a car rounded the curve at high speed and came 4 at me. I stomped (猛踩) on the brakes of my car killing the engine in the process. The speeder zoomed (疾驰) past my dead car 5 me by inches without even slowing down.
6 I knew it, a stream of rude words was flying from my lips, 7 after the car and its driver. I then saw my son who was staring up at me 8. With a red face and a(an) 9 smile I started the car, pulled back onto the road, and headed home.
Later that evening I was reading a book when I heard certain 10 words coming from my son’s bedroom. He was replaying the 11 over and over in his mind. Too 12 I realized the 13 of those words that had flown from my lips in that moment of 14. It took a lot of talks about good language and bad language with my son to undo (消除)the 15 of that incident.
That 16, however, did teach me just how strong words 17 be. It helped me to decide to stop swearing (咒骂) in my own life and to start using words uplifting and inspire instead. I slowly realized that language is a 18 from God and should be used to make our world better but not worse. I learned 19 that a few loving words can help a hurting heart, strengthen a 20 spirit, and lighten a heavy load. I pray then that all of your words today are full of love, joy, happiness, and light.

Another secret of animals’ survival is telepathy(心灵感应). This sense becomes atrophied(衰退) in man, but a(n) 1thought-communication functions in animals. Elsa, the lioness, frequently 2 when George and I intended to visit her camp, even though it 3180 miles from our home in Isiolo. On most 4when we made our irregular visit she was waiting for us. By following the spoor(野兽的足迹),we 5that she had sometimes walked 50 or 60 miles to meet us.
The same thing 6when I took Elsa’s sisters to Nairobi to be flown to the Rotterdam zoo, Elsa’s zoo. Elsa stayed behind with George in Isiolo 180 miles 7. He did not know when I was coming back, no person knew. But Elsa knew. On the morning of my 8she sat down at the entrance and wouldn’t make any 9until I arrived in the evening.
I have known this kind of thought-communication with the animal with whom I’ve lived. When Elsa died, I woke in the night, knowing what had happened, even though I was several miles away. The same thing 10later with one of Pippa’s cubs.
I don’t 11this sensitivity with my own kind. Feel far more in tune with what is going on when I am in the bush than when I am in London on Nairobi. We don’t know much yet about this telepathy from which gland(腺体) it comes, or how it 12. But if men could awaken or 13 it in themselves, and then cooperate by trusting each other, 14 fearing and treating one another 15, the world would be a far better place.

It was lunchtime and I walked into a small branch bank on the West Side. I had come to 1 a checking account. The only officer on 2 was a fortyish black man, standing 3 a small counter from a young white boy who was wearing a V-necked sweater. I thought I was especially 4 of the boy because he looked more like from a prep school than a 5 in a West Side bank.
The boy continued to 6 my attention because of what happened next. He was holding an open savings-account book and 7 an expression of disappointment. “But I don’t understand. I opened the account myself, so why can’t I 8 any money?” the boy said, his voice breaking.
“I know it is, but those are the rules. I’ve already explained to you that a fourteen-year-old is not 9 to withdraw money without a letter from his parents,” the officer explained patiently.
Suddenly I noticed the 10 had a series of small deposits (存款) and withdraws. Then I questioned the officer, “How do you 11 that? Why did you let him withdraw money before, but not now?” He looked 12. “Because the tellers were not aware of his age before and now they are. It’s really very 13.” I turned to the boy with a shrug. “You’re really getting 14,” I said. “You ought to get your parents to come here and protest.” The boy looked destroyed. 15, he put his savings book in a rear-pocket and walked out of the bank.
The officer turned to me. “You know,” he said, “you really shouldn’t have got 16.” I couldn’t believe what he was saying. “We were 17 this morning that some neighborhood bully has been shaking down (敲诈) this boy for more than a month. The guy was 18 him to take money out every week and hand it over. The poor kid was 19 too scared to tell anyone. Anyway, the police are on the case and they’ll probably make a(n) 20 today.”
“You mean there is no rule about being too young to withdraw money from a savings account?”
“Not that I ever heard of. Now, sir, what can we do for you?”
