Dear Jones,

You have asked me for suggestions on how to get along in the United States. It is difficult to give advice, but I have found the following "dos" and "don'ts" helpful.

As a 1 , it isn't easy to find anyone to 2 in a big city. However, here are some suggestions. 3 , get or borrow 4 ! Walk him several times a day! Americans love dogs and usually stop 5 to anyone with dog. 6 ,try to eat in a cafeteria (自助餐厅) .

People generally 7 the same tables and will sometimes talk to you 8 they see that you are a 9 .

Next, take your dirty 10 to a laundry (洗衣店) ! It takes about an hour to wash and dry, and many people 11 there. They often pass the 12 talking to the other customers (顾客) . 13 ask for information from a woman, if you are a 14 , and from a man, if you are a woman. It seems to get 15 results for a reason I can't understand. Learn the 16 :"Please", "Thank you ", and "You're welcome" before you come and use them all the time! They usually work like magic (魔术) .

There are some things you 17 . Don't tell the truth when people 18 "How are you ?" They only 19 the answer to be "Fine". Never ask people their 20 —especially women! Everyone wants to be young. Don't tell heavy people they are 21 . Tell them they are losing 22 . Everyone here wants to be 23 . Don't be late for appointments (约会) ! When someone says six o'clock, 24 be there by six. Americans respect 25 and expect everyone to be "on time".

Above all, don't worry! Just follow my advice and bring a lot of money, you will get along. I hope I have been of some help to you.

Cordially yours,

Socrates

Swimming and other water sports can be great fun Yet 1 people can not swim Many are 2 water They have no confidence (信心) in their ability (能力) to learn to swim well

A few years ago, scientists to find out how people learn new skills They found that, 3 ,the first time a person tried a task determined whether or not he would ever be any 4 it For example, if a child tried to rollerskate (穿四轮鞋溜冰) for the first time and did it well, then he would probably become 5 rollerskater If he did it badly, then he would probably never good For this reason, it is important that a person's first step at swimming should be successful

Scientists also know that a 6 experience will do harm to a person's confidence For example, if a nonswimmer (非游泳者) is 7 deep water in fun, it will take him a long time to regain (恢复) confidence in the water

So learners-swimmers (初学游泳者) should take each step 8 The first thing to do is to gain confidence in the water Never jump in at first Sit on the side Better still, walk slowly down the steps into 9 water Try to walk along the side of the bath Duck (猛然低下) your head under the water, keeping your eyes open 10 Lift your feet off the bottom and let your body float to the surface You will soon be ready to learn to swim

Cloze:

The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out. —Thomas Macaulay
Some thirty years ago, I was studying in a public school in New York. One day, Mrs Nanette O'Neill gave an arithmetic 26 to our class. When the papers were 27 she discovered that twelve boys had made exactly the 28 mistakes throughout the test.
There is nothing really new about 29 in exams. Perhaps that was why Mrs O'Neill 30 even say a word about it. She only asked the twelve boys to 31 after class. I was one of the twelve.
Mrs O'Neill asked 32 questions, and she didn't 33 us either. Instead, she wrote on the blackboard the 34 words by Thomas Macaulay. She then ordered us to 35 these words into our exercise-books one hundred times.
I don't 36 about the other eleven boys. Speaking for 37 I can say:it was the most important single 38 of my life. Thirty years after being 39 to Macaulay's words, they 40 seem to me the best yardstick(准绳), because they give us a 41 to measure ourselves rather than others.
42 of us are asked to make 43 decisions about nations going to war of armies going to battle. But all of us are called 44 daily to make a great many personal decisions. 45 the wallet, found in the street, be put into a pocket 46 turned over to the policeman? Should the 47 change received at the store be forgotten or 48? Nobody will know except 49. But you have to live with yourself, and it is always 50 to live with someone you respect.

It was 4 o’ clock in the morning when I received the phone call.

“This is the emergency room calling and your son was just 31 in with severe burns on his face, neck and arms. We have called for a (n) 32 and are going to fly him to the burn unit in Seattle.” Seattle was 350 miles from his college, so we knew immediately this was 33 .

The doctor described the 34 , which caused the burns. Our son and his friends decided to barbecue hamburgers in the courtyard of their apartment. When they 35 the charcoal(木炭), it burst into flames because they had sprayed too much gasoline(petrol). The flames 36 my son’s shirt tail(下摆) and shot from his waist to well over his head.

37 , one of the boys was quick-minded, grasped(抓住) my son, and 38 him on the grass. While it saved his life, it was not in 39 to save him from severe burns and the terrible scars(伤疤).

After he 40 from the treatments, the doctors told him they would not do plastic surgery(整容) for 6 months 41 it takes that long for the skin to stop shrinking(缩水) and wrinkling(起皱). So, he had to return to college with scars typical of severe burns.

When I was a child, my mother told my sister, who had a 10-inch, very 42 scar on her arm, “Nancy, if you ignore the scar, other people will ignore it. It does not mean they will not 43 it, but it means it will not matter to them if it doesn’t matter to you.”

I 44 this wisdom on to my son. He took my advice to his 45 and returned to school with his head held high——glad he was alive.

By the end of the six-month waiting period, he decided that the scars did not 46 , so he made the 47 to give up any plastic surgery.

We all have “scars” that we believe 48 people to keep away from us. And we spend a lot of time thinking that if only we looked differently, or dressed differently, people would like us better.

But you see, people will only judge you by your looks, or your clothes, if you are judging yourself by these same 49 standards. Put your imperfections out of your mind and concentrate on what you value 50 yourself, and your beauty will shine through.
