One possible version:

Recently a new policy was approved by the Ministry of Education. It is regulated that sports scores will be added to the scores of every student’s College Entrance Examination. The policy caused many people’s concern.

Some people hold the view that the policy will serve as a guide to strengthen students’ physical quality. Both teachers and students will undoubtedly attach great importance to physical education, and it’s easy to imagine the phenomenon that PE is always taken away will never be seen.

On the other hand, some people argue that Roman was not built in a day. It takes time to meet the goal. The teaching of PE should be aimed at developing students’ interest in sports rather than using scores as a means of assessment. If the policy of college Entrance Examination doesn’t carry out a reform fundamentally, this new policy won’t work out well.

In my opinion, every school should make a specific plan of improving students’ physical quality. Setting aside some time for students to work out every day is also helpful.

"Can I see my baby?" asked the happy new mother. When the baby was in her arms, she couldn't believe her eyes. The baby was born without ears.

Time proved that the baby's hearing was perfect though he had no ears. He got on well with his classmates. But one day, he said to his mother, tears in his eyes, "A big boy called me a freak (畸形物)."

The boy's father asked the family doctor,"Could nothing be done?"

"I believe I could graft (移植) on a pair of outer ears if they could be gotten," the doctor said. They tried to find a person who would be helpful to the boy.

Four out of ten parents in the UK spend between £100 and £500 on their children’s birthday parties, according to a survey. Four in ten parents of children under 18, who were questioned in a survey, admitted that they felt pressured into organizing more expensive birthday parties for their children than they would like to.

How much parents spend on their children’s birthday parties is one of the most frequently discussed topics on parenting websites. Here is one comment on Mumsnet summing up the thoughts of many parents: “Where we live everyone hires places, entertainers and so on. I don’t want to compare with my rich neighbors, but I want my son to have what all his classmates have.”

The research was carried out on behalf of the children’s charity, Lumos, set up by the author JK Rowling. Just 13 percent of parents spent £50 or less in the past year on their children’s parties.

Many children’s clowns(小丑) or entertainers charge £150 or more for an hour, and parents often feel it necessary to book a special place. Even without these, the cost of plates, the cake and party bags can mount up. Party Pieces, a company set up by Carole and Michael Middleton, charge about £16 for a birthday cake for a party with 16 guests, £22 for table decorations and up to £48 for party bags.

Many children of famous people have increasingly expensive parties, often seen in famous magazines. Suri Cruise, the daughter of actor Tom Cruise and actress Katie Holmes, enjoyed a £100,000 birthday party according to a report.

Georgette Mulheir of Lumos, said,“Parents in the UK are under increasing pressure to spend more and more money on birthday parties for their children and their children’s friends.”

Is it ever a good idea admitting a teenager to carry a credit card?

My kids watch closely as I swipe the card through the register. They’ve seen me do it hundreds, thousands of times. Cool. They are itching to swipe it through the machine themselves. When we walk out of the store with our groceries or pet food, or whatever, it’s almost as though money has not changed hands, painless, easy.

So it shouldn’t be shocking to discover that teenagers are becoming card carrying consumers in their own right. The question is, should they?

While some argue it’s best to teach kids how to use a credit card while still living under the family roof, not everyone agrees. Dave Ramsey, financial expert says getting credit card for your teenager is actually “an excellent way to teach him or her to be financially irresponsible.”

Now parents are required to co-sign on credit cards for children under 21. “If their name is on the credit card, then the parent may say, Hey, my name is on this. Don’t get me into trouble,” says Mary Beth Pinto, a marketing professor. “When parents were the co-obligors (共同借贷人), the children caused less debt. If the parents are the co-obligors, the tendency is that the parents were explaining how to use the cards.” Still, Pinto believes parents should start the process much earlier. “Yes, there has to be teaching going on and it has to start when they’re younger. You’re not going to get rid of credit cards. They are here to stay. You have to have them. You can’t fight progress,” Pinto said.

Ramsey, however, disagrees. “Throwing teens into a pool of (credit) sharks is a sure way to guarantee a life-time of heartache.” he said, “You can make online purchases and rent a car with a credit card. Of course, you must have money in your bank account before you can make a purchase with a credit card. But paying for things with money is what you are supposed to do.”

1.The author mentioned her experience in Para 2 mainly to _____.

A. prove the convenience of using credit cards

B. tell what impression credit cards leave on kids

C. give advice on using credit cards wisely

D. explain the pleasure credit cards bring to customers

2.The underlined word “itching” in Para 2 can be replaced by _____.

A. eager B. afraid C. embarrassed D. thankful

3.What’s Ramsey’s attitude towards teens’ using credit cards?

A. He feels it is worth a try.

B. He is very supportive.

C. He is strongly against it.

D. He considers it as a pleasant experience.

4.Pinto will most likely agree that _____.

A. parents should let teens own their credit cards earlier

B. you shouldn’t be in control of credit cards

C. it is never good for anyone to get a credit card

D. learning to use credit cards is practical

All things change except barbers, the ways of barbers, and the surroundings of barbers. These never change. What one experiences in a barber’s shop the first time he enters one is what he always experiences in barbers’ shops afterward till the end of his days.

I got shaved this morning as usual. A man approached the door from Jones Street as I approached it from Main--a thing that always happens. I hurried up, but it was of no use; he entered the door one little step ahead of me, and I followed in and saw him take the only empty chair, the one headed by the best barber. It always happens so. I sat down, hoping that I might sit in the chair belonging to the better of the remaining two barbers, for he was a bit ahead. I watched the probabilities with strong interest. When I saw that No. 2 was gaining on No. 1, my interest grew to solicitude (担心). When No. 1 was gradually losing the race, my solicitude rose to anxiety. When No. 1 caught up again, and both were about to finish and say “Next!” first, my very breath stood still with the suspense. But when I saw that he had lost the race by a single instant, I rose angrily and quitted the shop, to keep from falling into the hands of No. 2; for I have none of that firmness that enables a man to look calmly into the eyes of a waiting barber and tell him he will wait for his fellow-barber’s chair.

I stayed out fifteen minutes, and then went back, hoping for better luck. Unfortunately, all the chairs were occupied now, and four men sat waiting, silent, and looking bored, as men always do who are waiting their turn in a barber’s shop. I sat down and waited.

At last my turn came. A voice said “Next!” and I give in to No. 2, of course. It always happens so. I smiled and said that I was in a hurry, and it affected him as strongly as if he had never heard it.

He explored my hair with his claws and suggested that it needed trimming(修剪). I said I did not want it trimmed. He explored again and said it was pretty long for the present style. I said I had had it cut only a week before. He stopped for a moment, and then asked “who cut it?” I stared at him from the mirror and replied “You did!”. Then a dog-fight attracted his attention, and he ran to the window and stayed and watched it…

1.The author left the barber’s shop mainly because ___________.

A. he would like to wait for “No. 1” outside

B. he would rather be served by the best barber

C. he lacked the courage to tell “No. 2” his intention

D. he was angry at the slow speed of “No. 1”

2.What is the change of the author’s attitude from the moment he went into the barber’s to the moment he left it?

A. Disappointed---Anxious---Hopeful---Angry.

B. Disappointed --Hopeful---Anxious---Angry.

C. Hopeful--- Sad --- Anxious ---Angry.

D. Hopeful--- Anxious --- Angry --- Sad.

3.The underlined word “suspense” in the 2nd paragraph probably means ________.

A. loneliness                                             B. excitement

C. anxiety                                                D. hope

4.What is likely to happen next?

A. The author lost his temper.

B. “No. 2” ran out of his patience.

C. The author was well-served by “No. 2”.

D. The author also went to see the dog-fight.
