Today I am known for my voice. Perhaps the greatest honor came when I was asked to read The New Testament(《新约全书》)on tape .
But it  21  a long time to believe such good things could happen to me. When I was a child, I stuttered(结巴)so badly that I was completely  22  to speak in public.
23  when I was 14, Professor Donald Crouch came to my school. He was a retired college professor. English was his favorite subject and  24  was his deepest love. He held a book of poems as if it were a crystal,  25  pages as if uncovering treasures. When he heard that our school was teaching Shakespeare and other classics, he felt  26  for not being a part of our school sooner.
When he  27  that I not only loved poetry but was  28  it, we became closer. There was, however, one  29 -- Professor Crouch could not stand the  30  that I refused to read my poems to the class.
“Jim, poetry is  31  to be read aloud,” he said. “You should be able to speak those beautiful words.” I shook my head and  32 .
One day he   33  me .
After handing in a poem, I waited for his  34 . It didn’t come. Instead one day as the students had gathered together, he  35  me , “Jim, I don’t think you wrote this poem.”
I stared at him in disbelief. “Why,” I started,  36  flooding me. “of course I did !” “Well, then,” he said, “you’ve got to prove it by getting up and reciting it from  37 .”
By then the other students had settled at their desks. With knees shaking, I walked up to the front. For a moment I stood there  38  Then I began, and kept going. I recited my poem all the way   39 !
Afterwards, Professor Crouch encouraged me to read other writers’ poetry before the public. I discovered I did have a(n)  40  and found my classmates actually looked forward to hearing me recite.

When responding to any adult, you must answer by saying “Yes ma’am” or “No, sir.” Just nodding your head is not acceptable.
Because I grew up in rural North Carolina, this rule comes    36   to me, and it seems the obvious choice to come first. If you want children to respect you, you have to let them know    37 . Simply telling them you want them to address you by saying “sir” lets them know   38     you expect them to treat you. I also tell my students it’s a very useful tool when    39  with adults, and furthermore it also     40   handy for any adult interacting with another adult. Case in point: I was   41    the phone recently with the phone company discussing the inaccuracies(差错) of my    42  . The lady I spoke to was not 43   and seemed annoyed.    44  , in the midst of the conversation, I threw in a “yes, ma’am,” and her entire  45  changed. She became far more helpful and   46  to deal with, and she   47  cutting my bill in half.
Some of my students in Harlem were to be   48  for a chance to attend a high-rated junior high school. The school only had thirty openings for the following year, and twelve of my students were   49  the many kids across the city who applied for the spots. I practiced what the interview would be   50  with my students, and one main thing I stressed was, “  51  you say ‘yes ma’am’ or ‘no sir’ no matter what!” Weeks after the interviews, I was delighted to hear that all twelve of my students had been   52  . When I talked with the admissions director at the school, the main   53  he made over and over was how   54   my students were in their interviews. It seemed like just such a simple thing to do, but it gets   55  .

In the era of high-tech today, face-to-face conversation is dying.
The New York Times published an article recently that shows great   36  for the “death of conversation”. It   37  that while technology such as cell phones, e-mails, and Internet posting makes us feel more   38  than ever, they’re also driving us away from people around us.
Users get final connectivity   39  the price of   40  face-to-face conversation. Sherry Turkle, author of the article in The New York Times says people are   41  to a different way of being “alone together”.
Actually,   42  text messages or writing micro-blogs allows us to   43  thoughts. But bits and pieces of online cannot   44  a “real conversation.” Lan Guo, 19, a freshman English major from Changsha University, said that she would like to hear people’s tone of voice and see their faces in a conversation. “The give and take of   45  in a conversation sharpens our minds.” she said. She also mentions that   46  ourselves in mobile technology reduces our chance of starting conversations with strangers and   47  people.
Turkle mentioned the popular   48  of “I share, therefore I am.” among this generation. Liu Xuan, a young writer from Taiwan and psychology graduate from Harvard University, thinks it’s an attitude   49  by most young people. They are   50  busy creating or polishing their online persona (网络人格) that they forget how to live a   51  life.
However, experts remind us that it’s   52  to blame mobile technology. Chen Chen, a sociology expert at China Youth & Children Research Center, points out that   53  is still owners of tools who’re avoiding personal contact. We take advantage of these devices to hide ourselves from others. Texting messages or calling may be a(n)   54  to avoid contact with others, such as having eye contact. “Only by strengthening conversation can we understand each other.   55  throwing away the mobile phones is not a solution.” she said.

“Scotty!” Mr. Brown, my Year 11 English teacher, called me by my nickname (绰号) across the classroom. His eyes were bright and a secret   36  was half hidden behind the beard.
Once he finished joking over my unbearable   37 , I realized he was going to read my story aloud to the class. I turned red, feeling at once both embarrassed and   38 . I had my very   39  reading audience! Though my classmates were a ‘passive audience’, it didn’t weaken my feeling of being   40 .
After that, I came to   41  those Year 11 English classes. Throughout school I had always studied hard and achieved well in my school subjects. But creative   42  was a passion, and it was not an assignment, but a way of understanding the world and of   43  my thoughts and feelings about events and attitudes.
Mr. Brown was the first to   44  me for my writing so openly. My scores were always 19/20 or 20/20. My stories were often read out to the class. He even   45  one with the respected Head of English teachers, which was the most   46  part that is impressed on my memory. But   47  that, he offered a belief in me that no other teacher had.
My school   48  often stated, ‘Candice is a quiet achiever.’ I thought it was meant as a(n)   49  for being hard-working. I was someone that no one really   50  before, but Mr. Brown managed to   51  all that by bringing me to the attention of the world. Though it was the relatively   52  world of school, it put the seed of belief in myself that some day I could be an   53  person rather than the person who faded into the background.
I   54  touch with my teacher long ago, as we do when we move away from the school system and enter life. I wish I could tell him now how much he   55  me.

People always say that if God closed a door in front of you, there must be a window opened for you. Yes, people always say that, but  31  is the window for me?
I’m not disappointed, just a little worried  32  as my roommate said, “Why are you angry with yourself once you  33  to do anything?” I had no idea. I just can’t  34  myself if I can understand some easy things. Now, I just feel  35  with myself because I couldn’t finish the assignment(任务) on the lab, and what was  36  worse was that actually I didn’t understand what the  37  was! Fiona asked me why I didn’t  38  for help. The problem is that if I have to ask some silly questions, I will feel  39 .
Before I came here, I was confident. But I have totally  40  it. Sometimes I can’t even find the right words: sometimes I am too shy to  41  others. I have to admit that I am  42 .
The wisest people are always  43  who can take advantage of others’ wisdom. But I was so stupid as to close myself and  44  a lot of time soaking inside the workbook,  45  made me more confused. Why can’t I follow the sentence? I am  46  to get help the next time I have any questions. I can  47  I am not smart, But I shouldn’t hide it. I must  48  it as soon as possible. 49  I will have to waste much more time on it ---just like tonight.
Difficulties always go with me. Go  50  ! I can make it.

One day, Mary asked her mother, “Mum, what do people mean by saying they have a skeleton(骨架)in the closet(衣橱)?” Her mother paused thoughtfully and said, “Well, it’s something that you would rather not have anyone else know about. For example, if in the past, someone in Dad’s family had been arrested for stealing a horse, it would be a skeleton in his family’s closet. He really wouldn’t want any neighbor to know about it.”
“Why pick my family?” Mary’s father said with anger. “Your family history isn’t so good, you know. Wasn’t your great-great-grandfather a prisoner who was transported to Australia for his crimes?”  “Yes, but people these days say that you are not a real Australian unless your ancestors arrived as prisoners.” “Gosh, sorry I asked. I think I understand now.” Mary cut in before things grew worse.
After dinner, the house was quiet. Mary’s parents were quite angry with each other. Her mother was ironing clothes and every now and then she glared at her husband, who hid behind his newspaper pretending to read. When she finished, she gathered the freshly pressed clothes in her arms and walked to Mary’s closet. Just as she opened the door and reached in to hang a skirt, a bony arm stuck out from the dark depths and a bundle of white bones fell to the floor. Mary’s mother sank into a faint(晕倒), waking only when Mary put a cold, wet cloth on her forehead. She looked up to see the worried faces of her husband and daughter.
“What happened? Where am I?” she asked. “You just destroyed the school’s skeleton, Mum,” explained Mary. “I brought it home to help me with my health project. I meant to tell you, but it seemed that as soon as I mentioned skeletons and closets, it caused a problem between you and Dad.” Mary looked in amazement as her parents began to laugh madly. “They’re crazy,” she thought.

Renee had been married for a long, long time. Her favorite part of being married was the weekend, when she was with her two horses. On the weekend, Renee was at the stables(养马场) from morning until dark. She fed, groomed, and rode her horses. She was an excellent rider. She would ride the horses bareback on Saturday, and then she would saddle(给马装鞍) them up on Sunday.
Renee loved parades. She used to say, “A parade isn’t a parade without a horse.” Renee loved parades almost as much as she loved her horses. She belonged to an email list of volunteers for parades. She regularly visited the state website list of parades to see if there were any new parades that she didn’t know about. All the state parades were organized in her computer. In the parades file, she listed the date, drive time and distance, parade time, contact people, and other details she felt were important.
She knew the parade director of every town within a four-hour drive. She never stayed overnight. She always left the parade in time to get her horses back to the stables before “bedtime”. She had to feed them before they turned in. Her horses seemed to like parades, too. They knew a few tricks that always impressed the children.
Renee was very generous with her time and her horses. But owning horses wasn’t cheap. You had to rent the stables, and there were always vet(兽医) and feed bills. Renee knew how to cope with expenses, though. Her vet always gave her a 10-percent discount for paying cash. She always bought the no-name, generic food for the horses. Her vet had told her it was just as healthful and tasty as the brand name material. She always bought economy gasoline. And on parade days, Renee always packed her own lunch and ate with her horses.

However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighborhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families that he is considered the rightful property of someone or other of their daughters.
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day. “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?” Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.
“But it is, ” returned she, “for Mrs. Long has just been here, and she told me all about it.”
Mr. Bennet made no answer.
“Do you not want to know who has taken it?” cried his wife impatiently.
“You want to tell me, and I have no objection to hearing it.”
This was invitation enough.
“Why, my dear, you must know, Mrs. Long says that Netherfield is taken by a young man of large fortune from the north of England; that he came down on Monday in a chaise to see the place, and was so much delighted with it, that he agreed with Mr. Morris immediately; that he is to take possession before Michaelmas, and some of his servants are to be in the house by the end of next week.”
“What is his name?”
“Bingley.”
“Is he married or single?”
“Oh! Single, my dear, to be sure! A single man of large fortune; four or five thousand a year. What a fine thing for our girls!”
How so? How can it affect them?
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” replied his wife, “how can you be so tiresome! You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them.”
“Is that his design in settling here?”
“Design! Nonsense, how can you talk so! But it is very likely that he may fall in love with one of them, and therefore you must visit him as soon as he comes.”
“I see no occasion for that. You and the girls may go, or you may send them by themselves, which perhaps will be still better, for as you are as beautiful as any of them. Mr. Bingley may like you the best of the party. ”
