December 12

I’m so thankful we’re all okay. I never imagined I’d have to go through something as terrible as what happened yesterday. At first I thought we were about to have just a usual rainstorm. The sky got dark and the wind picked up. Dad came in early from the fields on his truck. Then my sister Julia said, “Look at the sky. Doesn't it look wired?”

We went to the window and saw big black clouds. I felt afraid as the strong wind blew up. Mom told us to run to the storm cellar, but I wanted to go to my room to get some of my things first. Mom caught me and made me stay with everyone else. As we ran toward the storm cellar, I saw a long, thin cloud drop down from the sky and touch the ground. The noise grew louder, like a train rushing straight at us. My little brother Mark started to cry. I picked him up and carried him down the steps into the cellar.

Above us, we heard terrible sounds that seemed to go on forever. All I could think about was losing my computer and MP3 player. I knew Julia was worried about the clothes she had just bought, and Mark was thinking about his favorite toys.

When it finally grew quiet again, we came upstairs. The whole house was gone. We all had the exact same feeling. Instead of crying about what we had lost, we hugged each other and cried because everyone was safe. We still had what mattered most—our family.

I used to shower with soap every day,but my skin(皮肤)always felt dry and itchy(发痒的). Then two months ago, I heard of the no-soap movement. Since then, I’ve given up using soap in the shower. I still shower every day. I just don't use soap because it's filled with chemicals.

So, what's so bad about using soap? Well, the chemicals in soaps can be harmful to our health. So, if we use soap, our skin will take in the chemicals, which will then end up in our bodies. According to the scientists, some of the chemicals used in a soap are quite dangerous. During my research, I also learnt that soap removes moisture(水分)from the body. This is actually why my skin was so dry and itchy.

Getting used to washing my body without soap was a huge change. For the first week, I felt a bit dirty and I didn't smell great, either. However, during the second week, my skin felt clean without strange smell. Best of all, my skin problems disappeared, and now I have softer and healthier skin.

On the whole, going soap-free has not only saved me time and money, but has also improved my skin. What's more, this experience has made me take a look at some of the other products I use in the shower, such as shampoo. More about that in my next blog!

1.What do people do when they join the no-soap movement?

A.Have a shower only a week. B.Never use soap when having a shower.

C.Throw away all the soap they have. D.Make soap on their own instead of buying it.

2.Why does Selina’s skin always feel dry and itchy according to the reading?

A.Because she takes showers too often. B.Because she often showers at a high heat.

C.Because the soap she uses smells terrible D.Because soap takes away her moisture.

3.What happened to Selina during the second week?

A.She smelt bad but felt clean. B.She felt dirty but smelt great.

C.She smelt normal and felt clean. D.She felt dry and smelt strange.

4.What might Selina write in her next blog?

A.When and how the shampoo was invented. B.Where and when her shampoo was brought.

C.How she enjoys the shower with shampoo. D.What she thinks of shampoo in the shower.

In Hong Kong, most schools are very strict about what students wear to school. For example, they do not allow students to wear any kind of accessories, such as necklaces or earrings. Some people argue that small items, like simple earrings, should be acceptable. However, I feel that students should not be allowed to wear any kind of accessories to school.

Firstly, if students are allowed to wear accessories to school, they will be less focused on their studies. Instead of discussing schoolwork, they will spend time talking about accessories. For example, things like the latest trends or where to find them. Besides, if students are allowed to wear accessories to school, they will probably spend a lot of time reading fashion magazines and shopping. As result, they will spend far less time on homework and revision.

Another reason why I think accessories should not be allowed in school is that they can be very costly. Even if students choose not to buy designer accessories, they may still spend a lot of their pocket money on them. This is because there are many types of accessories available and they would probably want several items of each.

All in all, if students are allowed to wear accessories to school, it will distract(分散) them from their studies. In addition, it will cost them a lot of money. Therefore, I believe that students should not be allowed to wear accessories to school.

1.Which of the following things are accessories?

A.Rings B.Sweaters C.Shoes D.Uniforms.

2.How do students probably get the information about new accessories?

A.By discussing schoolwork with friends. B.By chatting with some designers online.

C.By reading fashion magazines and shopping. D.By entering a school for only designers.

3.What is the writer's purpose of writing this passage?

A.To show different opinions towards whether students can wear accessories to school.

B.To argue why he thinks students should not be allowed to wear accessories to school.

C.To describe what accessories students are wearing to school in Hong Kong these days.

D.To advise more and more students in Hong Kong to wear simple accessories to school.

4.What is the structure of this passage?

A. B. C. D.

下面短文有五处需要添加小标题。请从以下选项(A、B、C、D、E和F)中选出符合各段意思的小标题。选项中有一项是多余选项。

A. Get exercise B. Shut off your brain C. Stop and get away

D. Walk or ride E. Have enough sleep F. Eat and drink right

Are you a stressed-out student?

You can beat it with our FIVE-POINT ACTION PLAN!

1.

Some people are OK with three or four hours of sleep a night, but most people aren't. You should try to sleep eight hours a night. If you can’t, then take a nap in the afternoon. Sleeping too long isn’t good, either. Don't stay in bed all day.

2.

Students often put on weight because they eat a lot of junk food and eat late at night. Bad idea! You should try to eat your evening meal early and have healthy snacks, like fruit. You should also try to drink at least eight cups of water a day. Finally, don’t skip breakfast. It's the most important meal of the day!

You don’t have to eat a big breakfast, but you should eat something.

3.

Sometimes you have to stop what you're doing. Take a break. Turn off the TV or computer, walk around the room, and breathe deeply. You should do this several times a day. And once a week, take a walk in a park or in the woods. Look at the trees and smell the flowers.

4.

Walk as much as you can. Walking is the best way to stay in shape. Or get a bicycle, but remember that riding a bike can be dangerous. You should always wear a helmet and bright clothes. Never ride without them!

5.

Do you have a gym nearby? You should use it. You don't have to exercise every day, but you should do some aerobic activity three to five times a week. Thirty minutes a day is enough. Remember: you can review for a test and jog on a treadmill at the same time.

My sister and I weren’t exactly what you would call close. I used to think everything she did was _________, and always followed her and her friends around, hoping to be _________, but there isn’t much room in a thirteen-year-old’s life for a troublesome ten-year-old sister. Over time, we became _________ living in the same house, eating together but never communicating.

_______ last year when she told me she’d study abroad for ten months, I wasn’t too upset.

That first night after she _________, I sat in my room and tried to do homework. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing. Sitting there, I realized just now _________ it was without her in the house. I cried that night. I cried over all the years we had _________ trying to live our own lives and paying no attention to each other’s. _________ as the night passed slowly, my tears changed to tears of new beginnings.

I _______ the phone and called her halfway across the world.

“Hello?”Her voice sounded as if it came from the room nearby and not South Africa.

“Hey,Tova. It’s me, Sara. I __________ called to tell you I love you.” My words came out in a rush. I knew that if I stopped in the middle, I wouldn’t have the __________ to continue. “I know we aren’t as close as some sisters, but that doesn’t mean I’m not __________ you.”

For a long time, there was only __________ on the other end. Finally, she spoke. “I’ve been sitting here, all alone, thinking about you back home,” she said. “Your voice makes me feel as if I’m right there with you.” And before she hung up she said, very __________ just as I had, “I love you, too.”

I’m counting down the days until my sister returns home, so I can say, “I’m so glad to have __________ home”.
