Dear Ace Travel,
My family and I want to take a trip this summer  1  in the east of China. I hope you can provide me with
some information  2  the kinds of vacations that your firm can offer. We would like to travel to an exciting
place, and we don't mind how far we have to go. It has to be a place where we can do lots of exercise; we
especially love hiking and swimming, but  3  kind of exercise is fine. We  4  need to stay in an inexpensive
hotel. It  5  nice if our hotel had rooms with kitchens so we could save money by cooking our own meals.
The room needs to be big enough for three people. Also, we'd like to stay at a place with a big pool or
somewhere near the ocean. Could you please give me some  6  for vacation spots? Also, please let us know
if it's  7  to travel by plane, train or bus. We'd like to be away for about three weeks. Thank you very much.

Is the big city really a good place to bring up a child? Personally, I feel that it is probably the worst place
to raise a child. To me, a child's health and safety are the most important things to consider, and a big city is
simply too dangerous for young children.
There is no doubt that a big city is not a healthy environment for a child to grow up in. Children in cities
are constantly exposed (暴露于) to pollution from cars and factories. As a result, they can develop serious
health problems which may stay with them for the rest of their lives.
What's more, living in a big city can be dangerous for children. Since there are few parks or playgrounds,
many children are forced to play in the streets, where they are in danger of getting hurt. There is also a lot of
crime and violence (犯罪与暴力),which means that children's lives are at risk.
On the other hand, there are usually much better education opportunities and leisure facilities (休闲设施)
in a big city than in the countryside. For instance, village schools are often not well-equipped, and children may
have to travel a long way to reach the nearest school. Similarly, a village or small town does not offer a wide
choice of sports facilities, cinemas and so on.
In conclusion, I believe that bringing up a child in a big city has far more against it than in its favor. The
choice of schools and a wider variety of leisure facilities do not make up for the risks to a child's health and
safety.

When I was about twelve years old, a girl in my class liked to point out my shortcomings (缺点).
Week by week her list grew: I was very thin; I wasn't good at math; I talked too much; I was too proud,
and so on. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then asked, "Are those things true or not? Jane, didn't you ever think about
what you're really like? And he added, "Well, you have that girl's opinions (意见). Make a list of everything
she said and mark the points that are true."
I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I found out that about half the things were true. Some of them
I couldn't change, like being very thin, but many I could. Suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I
got a clear picture of myself.
I brought the list back to Daddy, and he said, "Now you know better about yourself. But you have to learn
to listen, not just close your ears and feel hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be of
great help to you. Don't shut your ears. Listen to the truth, and do what you know is the right thing to do."
Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece
of advice.

When you cough or sneeze, you'd better turn your head away from others and cover your
mouth with the full part of your hand. And then, you should say, "Excuse me". This seems so
simple, but it is surprising how many kids have never been told to do this. Actually, I notice
adults all the time who cough and sneeze in public without placing a hand over the mouth. One
important thing I point out to the kids is that after they sneeze or cough on their hands, they
should
wash their hands as soon as possible. If not, they will be passing those germs (细菌) along to everything and
everyone they touch.
If you come to a door and someone is following you, hold the door. If the door opens
by pulling, pull it open, stand to the side, and allow the other person to pass through first,
then you can walk through. If the door opens by pushing, hold the door after you pass
through.
After a few weeks of seeing kids try to get through doors in the school and watching them enter restaurants
as the door hit other people, I knew I had to discuss the problem with my students. Teaching them small acts of
kindness, such as letting someone else go through a door first as they hold it open, may seem unimportant, but it
can go a long way toward helping students realize how to be polite and thank others. Once they've been told,
they're halfway there.
When we have to go up moving stairs, we will stand to the right. That will give others who
are in a hurry a choice of walking up the left-hand side of the moving stairs. When we are
going to enter a lift, the underground, or a doorway, we will wait for others to exit before
we enter.
After college when I moved to London, I was surprised at how polite everyone was in the subways. I was
even more touched when I traveled to Japan. In both places, people made effort to make way for others. On
moving stairs, everyone stood to the right and walked to the left. On lifts, everyone would stand over to the side
and allow others to exit before they would begin to enter.

A. hold the door
B. pass through
C. close the door
D. stand to the side

A. the rules of behaviour in public
B. the ways of communication

I am an eighth-grade student at Central Middle School. In my three years at the school, I have played
soccer, basketball, and baseball. I love sports and really enjoy being part of a team. Playing on our school
sports teams has been the best part of middle school for me. I know I'm lucky that I've had this opportunity.
Some kids have not been so lucky. In fact, many kids who love sports don't have the chance to play on
a school team. That's because, to make a team, you have to try out. The idea is that kids who are good at
sports will do well in tryouts and make the team. But what about the kids who don't do well during tryouts?
Maybe they are ill that clay, or nervous, or are just having a bad day, so they don't play their best. They don't
make the team, and that is too bad.
Also, there are kids who really don't have the skills to play well. They never make a team, and that isn't
fair either. How will kids ever learn the skills if they don't have a chance to play? Remember, this is school
and students are here to learn. All kids should have the chance to learn sports skills and teamwork by playing
on a school sports team.
There are other reasons why every student should have the chance to play sports. Sports are important
for good health and fitness. They help kids feel good about themselves and their school. They build friendships
among teammates. Coaches are good role models, and students who play team sports learn good sportsmanship. And, most important, team sports are fun! Players have fun playing, and their parents have fun watching and
cheering for the team. So, sports bring kids and parents together, too.
By now you know how I feel. Every kid who wants to play on a school sports team should have the
chance. These teams are for fun and fitness-they're not professional teams! Let's change the rules for
making a team. Let's get rid of tryouts. Let's give every student at Central Middle School the chance to
wear a team uniform.
1. How many kinds of sports has the writer played in the three years at school?
A. Two
B. Three
C. Four
D. Five
2. The writer believes that tryouts are _______.
A. fun
B. hard
C. useful
D. unfair
3. Which of the following is NOT true according to the fourth paragraph?
A. Sports bring kids and parents together.
B. Sports build friendships among teammates.
C. Sports help kids feel good about themselves.
D. Sports are fun and make students study better.
4. The writer's main purpose for writing this article is to _______.
A. advise kids not to try out for a school team
B. tell about exciting moments on sports fields
C. make people believe all kids should play team sports
D. share his opinions of playing team sports with readers
