Last week I turned forty. Forty years old. That’s an important day!

But when I met my good friend Julia on the train travelling to work, she only talked about the weather and her family.

Then I arrived at work and still nobody said anything! I talked to everyone, but nobody remembered my birthday! No present, no flowers, nothing, I didn’t even get a card. I said to people, “What are you doing after work?” I hoped someone would invite me for a birthday drink, but they all said, “Sorry, I’m busy.” Even at lunchtime, everyone was busy. I was very sad. I just worked on the computer all day.

Then I finished work and telephoned my brother, Peter, on my way home. He said nothing about my birthday, either! He was busy. He would have dinner that night with a friend of ours, Bruce.

So I walked home. I felt very sad. It was dark. I walked up to my door. I opened the door, turned on the light, and ... EVERYONE was there — Julia, my friends at work, my brother and Bruce! It was a party! They all sang “Happy Birthday”. So at last I had a good evening!
