【题目】 Everyone has traits (特性) that make us who we are. We have physical traits, like red hair, long legs and funny-looking toes. We also have character traits including humor, warmth, creativity and so on.

Certain physical traits are fully inherited (遗传), such as blue eyes and knobby knees. About 25,000 to 35,000 genes (基因) are in a single cell in the human body. These genes carry the traits that are passed down genetically from parents to their children.

Many traits exist between inheritance and development — the interaction with environment. One example is body shape. It tends to be passed down from parents. But once diet becomes a factor, environment begins to play an important role in how the body develops. Body shape is a trait that is a mixture of inheritance from parents and influence of environment.

So lots of our most important traits have been learned, rather than inherited. For example, if you’re really great at video games, it’s not because your parents passed down the skills in genes. It’s because you have practiced a lot of video games and developed those skills yourself. If you have kids who turn out to be great at video games, it is because they put in the hours, learned the skills, and memorized the moves that are necessary to play the video games well.

Of course, some of us have brains that are more advantageous to video game playing. Say you were born with a large and powerful part of the brain that controls your hand-eye coordination. That is inherited. What you do with it, how you choose to develop that advantage, is up to you.

You can pierce your nose or get a tattoo (纹身) — it doesn’t matter how much you change your body during the lifetime. None of those things will turn into genetic material to be passed down to the next generation. However, if your children grow up in an environment with role models who are pierced and covered in tattoos, they are more likely to get piercings and tattoos!

1 is a physical trait that is fully inherited.

C.The body shapeD.The pierced nose

2What does the underlined word “That ” refer to ?

A.Video game playing.B.Advantageous brains.

3According to the passage, the writer believes that .

A.character traits can hardly change during the lifetime

B.the skills of video game playing are passed down to kids

C.a kid’s hand-eye coordination isn’t related to inheritance

D.environment plays an important role in traits development

4Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Why are Traits Important?B.How does Inheritance Influence Traits?

C.Where do Traits Come from?D.What are Physical and Character Traits?

Let's Save Our Language Heritage

Each year on Feb 21, UNESCO holds an International Mother Language DayIMLD. The event is to draw attention to the disappearance of the world's languagesdozens of them are vanishing each year. UNESCO sees this as a tragedy(悲剧), and with good reason.

What happens when a language dies out? Something huge is lostnot just sounds and marks but the way that people make sense of the world and communicate with each other. And it is through language that we have culture and tradition. Kill a language and all this is killed too.

Through IMLD, more people are becoming aware of the destruction of linguistic(语言学的)diversity in modern times and trying to stop it. Google's 2012 Endangered Languages Project is a good example. Speakers and protectors of endangered languages upload text, audio and video files to the project site. They want to introduce people to the wonders of the way that people communicate and express themselves around the world.

The Myaamia Project is a similar kind of effort. This is an attempt to revive(重新使用)the language spoken by the Miami and Illinois tribes(部落)of the US. Project members work to encourage people to study and communicate with this language, which formally died out in the 1960s.

These activities, which breathe life into languages on the verge(边缘)of extinction, might seem old-fashioned to some. But those who work to keep languages alive are not enslaved(束缚)to the past. They are enthusiastic young people who design apps and use social media to champion their activities. As the US-based social event calendar website Upcoming puts it, they“spread the word" to save the word.

So, while the problem of disappearing languages remains a very serious one, there is hope. We all have a special feeling for our mother tongue, although those of us who speak one that is not endangered might not always be aware of it. This is why we should recall(回忆)the wise words of the late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela“If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

1When is International Mother Language Day?

2What happens when a language dies out?

3What is Google's 2012 Endangered Languages Project?

4What can we know from Paragraph 5?

5Why did the author mention Nelson Mandela's words?

【题目】 Mark Twain once said that everyone talks about the weather, but no one ever does anything about it. This was true in his day. But it may not be the cave in today’s world. In fact, humans have found many different ways to control the weather.

Cloud seeding(云催化) is a kind of technology that can control rain. It is done by spreading chemicals like dry ice or silver iodide(碘化银) inside of clouds, either by rocket or airplane. This changes water content inside the cloud, which helps to control the rainfall, the time and even the place where it rains.

This technology has helped to solve natural disasters, such as droughts(干旱). It has also played a key role during important events. For example, China used cloud seeding in Beijing just before the 2008 Olympic Games in order to stop rain from falling during the event.

Cloud seeding has been put into use for some time, however, some scientists are still wondering whether this technology is safe. On one hand, it is believed that it might have side effects(副作用). For example, silver iodide may be bad for the environment. On the other hand, no two clouds are the same, so every new experiment introduces new conditions.

In addition to controlling rain, scientists have also tried to find ways to weaken storms and hurricanes. Scientists at the US National Hurricane Centre Headquarters think it might be possible to control hurricanes by using lasers(激光). Others believe that burning rock oil in a hurricane’s path could slow the storms down.

1The material above may be from a(an) ___________.

A.poemB.playC.advertisementD.magazine

2What can we learn about cloud seeding?

A.Cloud seeding may not be environmentally friendly.

B.Cloud seeding can solve all the problems caused by rain.

C.Cloud seeding technology is welcomed by all the scientists.

D.Cloud seeding has been in use to control storms and hurricanes.

3This passage is probably written to tell ___________.

A.the advantages of cloud seedingB.the importance of technology

C.the ways of controlling the weatherD.the side effects of cloud seeding
