Life in a Chinese School

The school

My name is Daniel. I am in Grade 8. This is my second year at middle school. When we are in Grade 9, we have to take an exam to continue our studies. We go to school five days a week and have seven lessons every day. We study Chinese, Maths and English. We also have other subjects like Geography, History and Computer Studies. I like Maths best among all the subjects.

Activities

We have different clubs after school. Some clubs are for fun, such as the Guitar Club, the Chess Club and the Basketball Club. Some Clubs are for study, such as the Maths Club, the Physics Club and the Geography Club. I am a member of the English Singing Club. It is fun to sing English songs. We sometimes practise English in the English Corner. I have improved my spoken English a lot. On Wednesday and Thursday, we go to the library and borrow some books and magazines. Time seems to travel faster when we do the reading.

Big brothers and sisters

Boys and girls have lessons together at our school. There are more than 1,800 students here. Many new students need help to learn more about the new school. They may have problems with their new school life. When they have problems, they sometimes don’t want to tell the teachers. They may feel better if they can talk to the older students. At our school, the older students can join the Helping Hands Club. These big brothers and sisters talk to the new students and try to help them to work out their problems.

In China, everybody thinks it is very important to go to school. We are happy to be at school. And I should say our school is the best!

Why don’t birds get lost on their long flights (飞行) from one place to another? Scientists have studied this puzzle for a long time. Now they’re starting to fill in the blanks(空白).

Not long ago, experiments showed that birds use the sun to guide them during daylight hours. How do birds fly at night? Tests with artificial stars, which are made by people, have proved that certain night-flying birds are able to follow the stars in their long-distance flights.

They found a bird that spent its lifetime in a cage and never flew under a natural sky. But it was born with the ability to use the stars to look for the direction. This bird’s cage was placed under the sky filled with artificial stars. Any change in the position of the artificial stars caused a change in the direction of the bird’s flight. From the experiment, they found that the bird tried to fly in the same direction as those artificial stars moving under the natural sky.

But the stars are of course birds’ main ways of navigation (航行), when the stars are hidden by clouds, they can still find their way by such landmarks (路标) as river courses, mountain ranges (山脉), coast lines and so on. Because of this ability, people use the dove (鸽子) to send messages in some fields. For example, the doves were used to send messages in both World War I and World War II. During that time, thousands of doves were used to carry important messages in order to save the lives of many thousands of people. So it is also the symbol of peace.

But when it’s too dark to see these things, the doves are not able to find their way. They only circle helplessly and get lost.

When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect(尊敬) elders. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment in the United States.

I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One time, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me how the food could be served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect the elderly. As soon as I said that, her face showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive(敏感) Americans are and how they dislike the description(描述) “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized(道歉)to the wife. After the couple heard my reason, they understood that the problem was caused by cultural differences, so they laughed and were no longer angry.

In my village in China, people are proud of being old. Not so many people live to be seventy or eighty, and people who reach such an age have the most knowledge and experience. Young people always respect older people because they know they can learn from their rich experience.

However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since “old” shows that a person is going to retire or that the body is not working well. Here many people try to keep themselves away from growing old by doing exercises or jogging, and women put on makeup, hoping to look young. When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect the elderly, they got angry because this caused them to feel they had failed to stay young. I had told them something they didn’t want to hear.

After that, I changed the way I had been with older people. It is not that I don’t respect them any more; I still respect them, but now I don’t show my feelings through words.
