【题目】 Would it surprise you to learn that, like animals, trees communicate with each other and pass on their wealth to the next generation()?

UBC Professor Simard explains how trees are much mere complex(复杂的)than most of us ever imagined. Although Charles Darwin thought that trees are competing for survival of the fittest, Simard shows just how wrong he was. In fact, the opposite is true: trees survive through their co-operation(合作)and support, passing around necessary nutrition(营养)"depending on who needs it". Nutrition is shared through miles of underground fungi(真菌)networks, making sure that all trees in the forest ecological(生态)system give and receive the right amount to keep them all healthy. This hidden system works in a very similar way to the networks of neurons(神经元)in our head, and when one tree is cut down, it influences the whole forest.

Simard talks about "mother trees"usually the largest and oldest plants on which all other trees depend. She explains how dying trees pass on the wealth to the next generation, transporting important minerals(矿物质)to young trees so they may continue to grow. When humans cut down “mother trees” without noticing these highly complex "tree societies" or the networks on which they feed, we are reducing they chances of survival for the forest.

"We didn't take any notice of it." Simard says sadly. "Dying trees move nutrition into the young trees before dying, but we never give them chance. " If we could put across the message to the forestry industrywe could make a huge difference to our environmental protection efforts for the future.

【题目】An extract from The Greatest Tales of Sherlock Holmes

I think I will tell you what happened last night. My husband Sir Eustace went to bed at about half past ten. The servants had already gone to their rooms. Only my housekeeper s1 in her room at the top of the house until I needed her.

I sat until after eleven in this room, deep in a book. Then I walked round to see that all was right before I went u2 . I always did this myself, to be sure that everything is OK. I went into the kitchen, the store room, the living room, and f3 the dining-room. As I came near the window, which is covered with thick curtains, I suddenly felt the wind blow on my face, and realized that it was o4. I pulled the curtain to one side, and found myself face to face with a broad-shouldered, elderly man who had just walked into the room, The window is a long French one, which really forms a door leading to the lawn, By the light of my bedroom candle, I saw two other men entering behind the first. I was so scared, trembling. I s5 back quickly, but the man was on me in a moment. He caught me first by the wrist and then by the throat. I struggled to scream, but he hit me heavily over the eyes, and I fell to the ground.

I must have been unconscious for a few minutes. When I woke up, I found that they had torn down the bell-rope and had tied me tightly to the c6 standing at the head of the dining table. I was so firmly bound that I could not move, and a handkerchief round my mouth prevented me from making any sound. It was at this moment that my unfortunate husband came into the room. He had c7 heard some suspicious sounds, and he came prepared. When he rushed at one of the burglars, another man bent down and took the poker(拔火棍) out of the fireplace and struck him heavily as he passed. My husband fell without a groan(呻吟)and never moved again.
