Can you remember a time when somebody was kind to you? Perhaps a person allowed you to go in front of him or her in a long line. 1 Or perhaps a stranger or a friend helped you in a much deeper way. There are many ways to offer kindness. Few people would disagree with the idea that an act of kindness is a win-win situation. 2

Many organizations try to encourage people to do kind acts, wherever and whenever they can. The idea behind this is that it doesn’t take much to be kind, just a little bit of effort. 3 It works with schools and companies to teach people kindness skills. It holds the belief that kindness can be taught and can spread.

According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, there are three kinds of kindness. 4 Some examples are giving away old clothes to people in need or writing a positive online comment (积极的网上评论) about a restaurant that you like. The second is environmental kindness, which could mean simple recycling or organizing a group event to clean up a local park or beach. The third is personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly. 5 By being kind to yourself, you will be kinder to the world around you.

A.The first is interpersonal kindness.

B.Maybe your sister phoned you to ask how your week was going.

C.Some examples are taking a walk in nature or watching a film after a week’s hard work.

D.Perhaps the strongest supporter of this idea is the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.

E.It benefits (使受益) both the receiver of this kind action and the person who does the action.

1根据第一段第一句“remember a time when somebody was kind to you”讲述有人对你友好;第二句“Perhaps a person”和第四句“Or perhaps a stranger or a friend”在举例说明有人对你表示友好的表现,第三句选择“Maybe your sister phoned you to ask how your week was going”此处也在举例表达“可能你姐姐打电话给你,问你这周过的怎样”,也是一种友好。故选B

2根据第一段倒数第二句“an act of kindness is a win-win situation”表达“友好是一种双赢”;最后一句选择“It benefits (使受益) both the receiver of this kind action and the person who does the action”说明双赢的具体含义是对表现友好和接收到友好的人双方都有益。故选E

3根据第二段开头“Many organizations try to encourage people to do kind acts”讲述很多组织试着鼓励人们展示自己的友好。最后两句“It works with schools and companies to teach people kindness skills. It holds the belief that kindness can be taught and can spread”表达的是某一组织的具体行动和信念。 Perhaps the strongest supporter of this idea is the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation来举例说明最大支持者是the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation这一组织。故选D

4根据最后一段第一句“there are three kinds of kindness”讲到有三种友好的表现;以及“The second”和“The third”可知此处需要表述第一点的内容“The first is interpersonal kindness”人与人之间的友好。故选A

5根据最后一段倒数第三句“The third is personal kindness, which means treating yourself kindly”第三种是对自己的友好,要善待自己。此处举例说明具体指的是什么含义,选择“Some examples are taking a walk in nature or watching a film after a week’s hard work”比如一天的辛苦工作之后自己去大自然走走。

There are many ways to offer kindness;第二段Many organizations try to encourage people to do kind acts;第三段According to the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, there are three kinds of kindness。 例如第一题前后的句子都在举例,可知填的句子也在举例,可得出答案“Maybe your sister phoned you to ask how your week was going”。第二题在解释前一句“a win-win situation”的含义,可得出答案“It benefits (使受益) both the receiver of this kind action and the person who does the action”。

Do you think studying in a different country is something that sounds very exciting? Certainly, it is a new experience. However, there are also some problems you will meet. Because you may have difficulty getting used to a new culture. This is culture shock .

Actually, at least four main periods of culture-shock appear. The first period is called “the honeymoon ( 蜜月)”. In this period, you feel excited about living in a different place, and everything seems to be fun. You like everything, and everybody seems to be so nice to you. Also, the happy life in a new culture seems as if it will have no ending.

However, the second period of culture shock appears. This is the “enemy period”. You get to notice that not everything is as good as you had thought it was. You become tired of many things about the new culture. Besides, people don’t treat you as a guest anymore. Everything that seemed to be so wonderful before is now terrible.

After you deal with your enemy feelings, you come to the third period called “getting good again”. In this period, you will feel more active, and you try to develop understanding of everything you don’t understand. The whole situation becomes better; you feel well from the symptoms of the first two periods, and you adapt yourself to the new values and traditions of the new country. You get to see that even the culture is different from your own, it has something that you can learn from.

The last period of culture shock is called “nature”. In this period, you have reached a point where you actually feel good because you have learned enough to understand the new culture. The things that made you feel uncomfortable or strange are now things that you understand. Now you feel comfortable, and you have adapt yourself to the new culture.

However, when you have got used to a new culture, you can more fully enjoy it. You learn how to communicate with other people, and learning about other cultures helps you learn more about yourself.

1When you are studying in a foreign country, what will you do?

A.Discover funny things.B.Have a chance to get rich.

C.Meet advantages and problems.D.Have the feeling of freedom.

A.You mainly experience the good things in a new culture.

C.You think that you are on a holiday with your family.

D.You believe everything will always be OK.

3If you are in the second period, you will probably feel .

A.boredB.worriedC.relaxedD.surprised

4What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “symptoms” in the passage?

A.Influences.B.Illness.C.Changes.D.Differences.

5After learning the passage, we will know .

B.how to stop the culture shock happening

C.how to communicate with people in a new culture

D.how to deal with the shock of living in a new culture
