【题目】第二节阅读填空

It feels like every time my mother and I start to have a conversation, it turns into an argument. We talk about something as simple as dinner plans and suddenly, my mother will push the conversation into World War III. She’ll talk about my lack of a bright future because I don’t plan to be a doctor. And much to her disappointment, 1. In fact, when I was pushed to say that I planned to major in English and communication, she nearly had a heart attack.

“Why can’ t you be like my co-worker’s son?” she complains all the time. Her co-worker’s son received a four-year scholarship. He is now earning 70,000 dollars a year as an engineer, 2 I simply can’t be like her co-worker’s son. I can’t be like him. I’m the type of person who loves to help out in the community, write until the Sun goes down, and most of all, 3 not because of fame or salary.

4 I’ve seen my mother struggle to raise me on her small salary and work long hours. She leaves the house around 6:30 a.m. and usually comes home around 5 p.m. or even 6 p.m. However, I want her to know that by becoming a doctor, 5 I’d rather follow my dreams and create my own future.

【题目】 Sherlock Holmes, the world’s greatest detective(侦探), is not a real person.

He is a character from Writer Conan Doyle’s books. Since he created Holmes in 1887, he has been taking us on adventures, one after another.

In the books, Holmes is thin and tall. He often wears a cap and long coat. He thinks and speaks very fast. He smokes and plays the violin. He is good at watching and analyzing (分析) things. He also knows a lot about chemistry.

But Holmes is lonely and unhappy. He is arrogant and often speaks to others impolitely. It seems that no one likes him except Watson. They are close friends and good partners. They trust each other and help each other out of danger.

People look to Sherlock for both adventure and logical(逻辑)thinking. Each adventure shows us an exciting journey. In the journey, we join him and become detectives too, looking out for truth.

Yet Holmes is no Superman. He can’t fly or have super power. But his powers are within of us: reason and logical thinking. While an artist’s painting is his art, Sherlock’s art is his cleverness. He is human, and this is what makes Holmes a true hero for all of us.
