With the development of the Five One-hundred Project in Yangzhou, our school has had a discussion about whether it is necessary for middle school students to read English classics.

【答案】With the development of the Five One-hundred Project in Yangzhou, our school has had a discussion about whether it is necessary for middle school students to read English classics. I think reading English classics is not only necessary but also important. First, we can learn a lot about Western history and culture by reading. Second, by reading classics we can enlarge our vocabulary and improve our writing. Finally, it can help us with our lifelong learning. So I often spend my free time reading English classics.

I am in the Reading Club. And I often take notes while reading. What’s more, I sometimes ask the teacher for help if I have difficulty reading books.

If some students are weak in English, they can read the short and easy English stories at the very beginning. Well begun is half done. Next, they should keep reading and never give up. Then their English will be improved little by little.

The Old Man and the Sea is a short novel written by the American author Ernest Hemingway in 1951 in Cuba. It tells the story of a fight between an aging fisherman and a giant marlin (枪鱼).The novel opens with the fisherman, Santiago, who has gone 84 days without catching a fish. He is so unlucky that his young apprentice (徒弟), Manolin, hasn't been allowed by his parents to sail with the old man.On the 85th day, Santiago sets out by himself, far onto the Gulf Stream. He sets his lines and by noon, a big marlin takes his bait (鱼饵). After threedays' struggle with the fish, Santiago manages to tie the marlin to the side of his boat. While Santiago sails back to the shore, sharks are attracted to the blood left by the marlin in the water. Though Santiago makes a great effort, they have almost eaten up the marlin. Santiago knows that he is defeated (打败) and tells the sharks of how they have killed his dreams. Once home, he is so tired that he goes straight to bed and falls into a deep sleep.Manolin feels much worried. The next day he brings him newspapers and coffee. When the old man wakes, they promise to fish together once again. The old man doesn't feel well and also coughs up blood a few times towards the end of the story.Readers think that the story is about man's fight against the natural world. In the story, Santiago and the marlin show similar qualities of pride, honour, and bravery, and both have to obey the same natural law—they must kill or be killed.

The novel has received so much praise and is considered to be one of Hemingway's most famous works. It was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954.

【题目】 China and Western countries may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals, but when it comes to pigs, we have somehow reached an agreement—that pigs are ugly, lazy, stupid and shameless.

Just look at the idioms and phrases in our languages. In Chinese, we have the likes of “Boiling a dead pig” and “A pig looking in the mirror is still a pig”. And in English, there are expressions such as “eating like a pig” and “sweating like a pig”. None of them are exactly praise.

But truth is that pigs do have some fine qualities. And maybe there’s no better time to clear their names than now, with the arrival of Year of the Pig on Chinese Spring Festival.

For starters, science had proved that pigs aren’t stupid at all. According to a paper published last year in the International Journal of Comparative Psychology, pigs are “mentally and socially similar to dogs and chimpanzees(黑猩猩)”. By training, pigs can learn some skills, such as dancing and swimming. They like to play. They have good long-term memories. And they can tell between who treat them well and those who don’t.

There are popular pig characters in cartoons too. In the UK cartoon series Peppa Pig, the four members of the cartoon’s pig family teach children from all over the world about love, friendship, and the value of family. And in China, the adventures of McDull, a piglet who works hard toward his dreams even though he keeps failing, have been recounted in films since 2001. “People care too much about the immediate results, but McDull is slow and patient, and not afraid of repeating failure,” said McDull’s creator Brain Tse. “He has a heart of gold.”

Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to keep in heart when we celebrate the New Year—their wisdom, cuteness, patience and bravery.
