【题目】________wild animals are disappearing because of the ________of their living areas.

A.The number of; lostB.The number of; losingC.A number of; loseD.A number of; loss

【答案】D

【解析】

句意:许多野生动物正在消失,因为它们的生活区域正在消失。

考查词组辨析和名词。the number of…的数目,跟复数名词连用,作主语时,中心词是number,谓语动词要用单数;lost失去,lose的过去式;a number of很多,相当于many,修饰可数名词复数,作主语时,谓语动词用复数;loss丧失、遗失,作名词。根据句中的关键词“are”,可知符合a number of的用法。所以第一个空格填a number of,进而正确答案只能从选项CD中选择。根据第二个空格前的the,可知空格上要填一个名词或者相当于名词的词。选项C中的lose是动词,故排除选项C,故选D

【题目】 It happened to me recently that I was telling someone how much I enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams from My Father and how it had changed my views of the former US president. The person I was talking to agreed with me that it was a wonderfully written book. However, he then went on to talk about Mr. Obama, which showed that he had no idea of his background at all. I realized that I was talking to a book liar.

______ Nearly two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t read. In the World Book Day survey, Dreams from My Father is at number 9. The survey lists top ten books, and different writers, which people have lied about. As I don’t lie very often, I’ll admit (承认) that I haven’t read all the ten books. But I am pleased to say that I have read the book at number one, George Orwell’s 1984. I think it’s absolutely outstanding.

When people were asked why they lied, the most common reason was to impress someone they were speaking to. This could be difficult if the conversation went deeper!

The World Book Day survey also has some other interesting information in it. It shows that many people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens and so on. But when asked which writers they really enjoy, they named J.K. Rowling, Jilly Cooper, and Stephen King (ah, the big sellers). Forty-one percent of people asked said they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story.
So which books have you lied about reading-if any-and which is your favorite?

1Which of the following can be the missing part in Paragraph 2?

A.Do you know what a book liar is?

B.And it seems that that person is not the only one.

C.Dreams from My Father is really popular in the world.

D.I’m a book liar, too.

2What does the World Book Day survey show?

A.Over 40% of people didn’t really read a whole book by famous writers.

B.People don’t like Dreams from My Father and 1984.

C.Few people lie about having read classical works by Jane Austen.

D.Many people like Charles Dickens better than J. K. Rowling.

3If we put the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?

(=Para.(自然段)1 Para.2 =Para.3 =Para.4 =Para.5)

A.; ; ③④⑤B.①②; ; ④⑤

C.①②; ③④; D.; ②③④;

4The best title of the passage may be “_______”.

A.Are You a Book Liar?B.Readers Are All Liars

C.World Book DayD.Dreams from My Father

【题目】 It’s March, 2050. Frank and Mary Smith wake up in their comfortable house in the morning and switch on the bedroom computer to get the latest news. They used to read the Times, but changed to electronic newspapers many years ago.

There is the usual news about space: another space flight has returned from Mars and scientists have discovered a new planet. Then they turn to business news: the US dollar has risen greatly in Shanghai, one of the world’s leading business centers. Mary tells the computer to buy 5,000 dollars, and there is a quick response that it has been done.

As they watch the screen, Mary orders one of the household robots to make coffee for them. Frank disappears into the study to join a video conference with his partners around the world. He is a computer engineer, working for several companies. This is his third job: he used to be in marketing and then television.

Mary has a quick look at the shopping channels—the usual selection of electric cars, household robots and cheap travel offers—before picking up the video phone to talk to her assistant. She also has a job and she is doing medical research. Both she and Frank used to have an office desk in London, but in 2014 they decided to move to the seaside and work from home.

Frank and Mary have one daughter, Louise, who also has her own workstation at home. She goes to school only one day a week, mainly to play with other students. Classrooms disappeared in 2030 because there was no longer any need for them: communications systems have made it much easier to learn at home.

Louise, now thirteen, is studying Chinese at present, which has become a world language as important as English. Louise has many Chinese friends. They communicate by computer.

According to the family doctor, Louise will live to at least 130. Her wish is to work for a few decades (十年) and then spend her time on music and painting.

1Why do Frank and Mary switch on the bedroom computer in the morning?

2Who makes coffee for Mary and Frank?

3How does Frank work with others from home?

4What are the two world languages in 2050?

5What do you think of Louise’s life in 2050?
