Eric and Chen first met in their Maths class at an American college. Chen was an International student from China. He wanted to learn about American culture and hoped he and Eric would become good friends. At first, Eric seemed friendly. He always greeted Chen warmly before class. Sometimes he offered to study with Chen. He even invited Chen to eat lunch with him. But after the term was over and they were in different classes, Eric seemed more distant. They didn’t see each other very much at college. One day Chen called Eric, but Eric didn’t seem very interested in talking to him. Chen was hurt by Eric’s change of attitude(态度).“Eric said we were friends.” Chen said. “I thought friends were friends forever”. As a foreigner, he doesn’t understand the way Americans view friendship.

Americans use the word “friend” in a very general way. Their friendship is based on common interests. When the shared activity ends, the friendship may die. Now as Eric and Chen are no longer classmates, their “friendship” has changed.

In some cultures friendship means a strong life-long tie between two people—friendship develops slowly, since it is built to last. But American society changes quickly. One fifth of American families move every year. American friendship develops quickly, and it may change just as quickly.

Learning how Americans view friendship can help non-Americans remove misunderstandings(误解). It can help them make friends in the American way.

My grandfather did not live with us because he was a very busy man, helping the poor in a small town. But as the holidays drew near,he would take the train to visit his grandchildren for a few days during the winter vacation. My favorite part of the holiday was the trip my grandfather and I would make together every year on December 24. I love him for that.

Grandfather was the first one to own a radio in his town, a large box made of wood. He kept it in the Outer House, where he saw his patients and chatted with friends. My grandfather’s radio became the only way to learn the news of the Second World War.

He was also the first one to send a daughter(my mother)to college, an act that made the whole village surprised. For this reason, he was the person I could ask about anything. He knew

everything-----from the capital of France to how fish were able to breathe(呼吸)under the water.

This December 24, my grandfather andI walked together to Firpo’s. We discussed what to buy at Firpo’s as we walked. We ended up buying the fruitcake, the same as last year. Grandfather got me a cookie to eat on the way back. I asked grandfather a question that I 'd been thinking over for some time now. Why was Christmas called the Big day?

Grandfather was silent for a whole minute and when he finally spoke, his voice was slow. Christmas----the birthday of a very special soul, it was a day to grow big, he said.

“And how do you grow big in your heart, Grandfather?” I asked him.

He answered slowly and softly, as though I were the same age as he,”By doing something you think will make them happy. Something you don’t have to do, by putting their needs before yours at least once a day. It’s a good start for trying to live a big life.

Do you hope to do a lot of homework every evening? Are you interested in your English classes? Who do you want to teach you? Maybe you have lots of questions in your mind before school starts.

Well, I want to give you some good advice on these problems.

First, keep calm(平静). Don’t worry about all the problems you have. Put your heart into learning, and you can find something you are interested in. Do it actively.

Second, try your best to finish your homework quickly. Don’t spend a lot of time on it. Do more reading or writing in English. Think about the problems you have and solve them at once. Don’t stay up(熬夜) late, or you can’t study well the next day.

Third, invent something instead of copying or repeating. If you can remember the words in your way, you can tell your teachers you don’t like the way of copying them again and again. Be sure, you must pass the test. I think your teachers will agree with you. And they can give you some interesting work to do.
