The smallest library in the world has appeared on the streets of New York City---and it has space for just one reader at a time. The bright yellow plastic building has 40 books and its purpose(目的) is to help travelers take a break with a good story.
The Little Free Library was designed by two creative architects(建筑师) using recycled materials, with holes allowing visitors to look in before they enter the building. Architects Marcelo Ertorteguy and Sara Valente said the library creates an environment which keeps its users in the experience of reading books.
The library in Manhattan has attracted(吸引) a great deal of interest since it was set last month. “The Little Free Library idea was created about three years ago and quickly started to appear in the other places, including Europe, Africa and India,” Mr. Ertorteguy said.
He added, “With the library we wanted to create a place where to slow down, a small place in New York City’s streets where to get into a new world---the world of the book you pick.”
There are more than 5,000 Little Free Library across the U.S. and the other countries, but most are nothing more than outdoor bookshelves which cannot hold readers inside. The project is to give everyone access to reading material even if they live in areas which are not served by public libraries.
