Norman Vincent Peale, a famous writer, once told a story. One day, a man named Frank telephoned him and said he had nothing left to live for. Peale invited him to his office. “Everything is gone, and I’m hopeless,” Frank told Peale. “I’m living in the darkness. In fact, I’ve lost hope for living.”

Peale smiled, feeling sorry for him. “Let’s take a look at your situation(处境).”

On a piece of paper he drew a straight line down in the middle. He told Frank that they must list the things Frank had lost on the left side, and on the right side, the things Peale hadn’t lost.

“You won’t need that column(栏;列) on the right side,” said Frank sadly.

It seemed Peale did not hear him. Peale asked, “When did your wife(妻子) leave you?”

“What do you mean? She doesn’t leave me! My wife loves me! “

“That’s great! “ said Peale excitedly, “Then we’ll only put that to the right column. Number One—Wife left. Now, when did your children go to prison(监狱)?”

“My children aren’t in prison! “

“Good! That’s Number Two on the right side--Children in prison.” said Peale, writing it down.

After a few more questions, at last Frank got it and smiled. “Funny, how things change (改变) when you think of them that way.” he said.

Now lots of parents will buy everything that their children want to have. If they go on with the habit, their children won’t know the money comes from hard work.

Some parents like to hold birthday parties for their children. If they keep on doing this, their children will think it necessary for them to enjoy birthday parties every year. Year after year, maybe they will forget their parents’ birthdays and only remember their own. It is against traditional habits.

Many parents don’t let the children do housework. They think children have only one thing to do. They should study hard and do well in their lessons. If parents go on doing this, the children will only learn to open their mouths to be fed and stretch out their arms to be dressed every day. When the children grow up, they will be able to do nothing , and they won’t even find a job. Parents should teach the children how to do housework because it can help them start good habits of work by themselves.
