Frank is a student. He likes playing with his phone very much. And he keeps the phone with him at all times. His dad thinks he is addicted (上瘾的) to his phone. But Frank doesn’t think so. They write to each other.

Dear Frank,

You’ve heard the warnings. It’s reported that fifty percent of the teenagers depend on their phones too much. I think you have this problem too. That’s why I think you should give up your phone. Not forever, just for a week. I’m worried that you are developing some bad habits. You keep your phone with you all the time – you even check the basketball scores at the dinner table. It’s not a good idea to use your phone while you are doing homework. You can’t put your heart into your homework at all. And you may make more mistakes when you can’t fully put your heart into it. There are many good reasons to take a break from your phone. Have a try! So what do you say? Are you ready to give up using your phone?

Love

Dad

Dear Dad,

I know you think I depend on my phone too much. But I’m just using technology to help my life to be better. My phone helps me in many ways.

Do you remember that time when the car broke down? I sent a message to tell you that I was going to be late. If I didn’t, you would be worried about me. My phone helps me with my homework too. I can look up anything in a second. It’s really hard to be successful today if you don’t have a phone. Social media, games, and apps might seem silly to you, but they help me to keep in touch with my friends. I promise to cut back my phone use, and I won’t use it at the dinner table anymore. But giving it up for a week would be a mistake and it wouldn’t change anything in the long term.

Love

Frank

A road is a bridge between two places. The Silk Road has been a bridge between East and West for more than 2,000 years.

But did you know that the Silk Road is not a single route? It is actually a series of trade and cultural transmission(传送)routes. It started to take shape during the Western Han Dynasty. The trade route started from the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province and ended in eastern Europe, near today’s Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea(地中海). The Silk Road was about 6,500 kilometers long. It went across one-fourth of the planet.

The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. In addition to silk, jade (玉), tea and iron also went west to Rome. From the West came glass, gems(宝石), and foods like carrots and sesame.

The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. In addition trade, knowledge about science, arts and literature, as well as craftsmanship and technology, was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.

Today, various historical sites along the Silk Road are popular travel destinations, such as the Terracotta Warriors(兵马俑)in Xi’an and Mogao Grottoes(莫高窟) in Dunhuang, Gansu .A new train line, the New Orient Express, is running from Beijing across the Silk Road.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said, “I’ve noticed that all the nice looking, expensive cups______up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. Although______is normal for you to take only the best for yourselves, that is the root of your problem and stress. You know that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. And ______ you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, ______ you all went for the best cups.”

Now think about this: Life is the coffee, the jobs, money and position in society are the cups. A successful experiment (实验) in the deserts of Dubai (迪拜) may deal with hunger around the world. A team of Chinese scientists has tried to develop a kind of rice that grows in salt water. Not only that, it produces far more rice than you can imagine.

Back in January, 2018, the researchers were invited to plant some of the saltwater rice in different areas of the desert. Usual water is too expensive to waste on rice in those desert areas. After five months of growth, they produce up to 7.8 tons of rice a hectare (公顷). At the same time, the world average (平均数) stands at 3.3 tons a hectare.

The researchers from China are continuing the experiment by setting up a 100-hectare salt-water rice farm in 2019. It will show the costs of production and different farming skills. They hope to plant saltwater rice on more farms in 2020.

Their dream is to cover up to 10% of the country with the saltwater rice fields—and if the skills are successful in Dubai’s bad farming weather, then the farms could “feed the whole Arab world and they help to ensure (确保) food security (安全)”.

Yuan Longping is the “father of hybrid rice” and leader of the research group. He says that there are over l million square kilometers of land in China that is not used because there is too much salt in the soil. By planting saltwater rice on just one-tenth of this land, we hope it will feed over 200 million more people.

A.Usual water. B.Salt water. C.Hot water. D.Cold water.

2.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?

A.The researchers from China won’t plant saltwater rice on farms in 2020.

B.The experiment of setting up saltwater rice farm will cost much money.

C.Chinese researchers hope to plant saltwater rice on more farms by doing experiments.

D.The experiment won’t show any different farming skills.

3.What does the underlined word “they” refer to?

A.The farms. B.The skills. C.The scientists. D.The Arab world.

4.What does Yuan Longping think of saltwater rice?

A.It’s terrible. B.It’s impossible. C.It’s unnecessary. D.It’s hopeful.
