If you are like most people, your intelligence (智力) changes with the seasons, you are probably a lot
sharper in the spring than you are at any other time of year. A famous scientist, Ellsworth Huntington
(1876-1947),concluded (总结) that climate and temperature have an effect (作用) on your mental
abilities(智力).
He found that cool weather is much more favorable for creative (激活) thinking than summer heat. This
does not mean that all people are less intelligent in the summer than they are during the rest of the year. It
does mean, however, that the mental abilities of large numbers of people tend to be lowest in the summer.
Spring appears to be the best period of the year for thinking. One reason may be that in the spring man's
mental abilities are affected (受影响) by the same factors (因素) that bring about great changes in
nature .
Fall is the next-best season, then winter. As for summer, it seems to be a good time to take a long
vacation from thinking.

same climate.

| There are many things we need to know, but we do not learn them at school. For example, if we want to use our money wisely, we need to shop carefully. We need to know how to compare (比较) the prices of the things in different shops. We also need to know how to make the best choice when we shop. Knowing how to make such choices is a life skill, and we need to practice it in our daily life.

| David's got a text message from his friend Sam. Can you understand it? 7,15 20,15 20,8,5 16,1,18,11 This message was in code (密码, 代码). How many letters are there in the English alphabet? Twenty-six. So can you read it now?
B instead of C, and so on. His message to Sam shown on the right was very short. Can you understand?
she felt puzzled. She couldn't read it at all. But David was very happy that his sister couldn't read his message! Lots of people use codes to send secret messages. In a war, secrets are very important so soldiers often send each other messages in code. Nowadays, we can use computers to make and break difficult codes. Even before computers, people invented other machines to do this. Here's a famous machine that Germans used in the Second World War (1941-1945). It's called the Enigma Machine. The machines were very big, heavy and expensive. Every day they changed the codes automatically, and this made it almost impossible for anyone to break the codes. The person sending a message had one machine, and the person receiving the message had another. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
