Canada is the second-largest country in the world, with almost 10 million square kilometres of landmass. Due to(由于) its size, it is divided into four different regions(地区).

The Atlantic Provinces

Fishing is the old industry in this region. Agricultural crops, such as fruit and potatoes, and forests, which produce paper and lumber(木材), form part of the industry. Traditionally depending on fishing and farming, they are developing other natural resources, such as oil and copper.

Central Canada

Ontario and Quebec form the industrial and manufacturing(制造业的) heart of Canada. They produce three quarters of Canada’s goods. More than half of Canada’s population lives in the cities in the southern part of Ontario and Quebec. Most of the people living in Quebec speak French.

The West Coast

The British Columbia Coast is Canada’s western continental coastline(海岸线 ). Europeans settled(定居) in British Columbia in the early 1800s. The railroad built by the government in the late 1800s made moving much easier. Thousands of Chinese came to British Columbia during this period to work on the railroad. British Columbia has the most valuable forest industry in Canada.

Salmon(鲑鱼) fishing is not only a popular sport, but also an important part of the industry. Pacific salmon are exported(出口) all over the world.

The North

The Yukon and the Northwest Territories(领土) cover a third of Canada. This huge region has a very small population. Most of the people are natives. There are several native languages, which are equal(平等的) in status(地位) to English and French. During the Gold Rush at the end of the 1800s, thousands of miners(矿工) came to make their fortune(财富). Mining is still an important industry in this region.

One day, three of my friends came to our house.

They told me they wanted to go to Africa. They asked me if I wanted to go with them. I said, "Yes, I want to go with you."

We started to prepare all the necessary things for the journey. Soon we were ready to go. I said goodbye to my wife and we started our journey. Our plan was to be back in two months.

We left Brazil on the first of September, 1655. Our ship was very big but we were only seventeen men. The ship was full of things for business. We had cups, glass, mirrors, knives and other products.

At the beginning of our journey the weather was very good, but very hot. In one week, a hurricane (飓风) came and it was threatening our ship for the next twelve days. After the hurricane passed, we saw we went quite far from our original (原来的) journey and were instead close to the northern part of Brazil near the Orinoco River. The ship was badly damaged, so we could no longer go to Africa.

The captain wanted us to go back and repair the ship, but I strongly disagreed with him. We went over the maps and decided the best thing to do was to go to Barbados and repair the ship there.

When we started this short trip, a second hurricane came. The next morning one of the sailors cried out, "Land?" and at that moment the ship stopped in shallow (浅的) water. We expected the ship to break apart at any moment because of the strong wind, so we all got into the small boat the ship carried. This was very dangerous because the seventeen of us were crowded in the boat, and it had no sail.

The waves were very big. The wind was extremely strong. The wind pushed us to big rocks. We knew the crash was close.

Suddenly, a huge wave appeared and overturned the boat. I was covered with water and couldn't breathe. I couldn't see tile others or the boat. But I saw a little beach between the rocks.

Another wave carried me to the beach. I tried to get up. I tried to go further froth the sea. I was able to move ten metres up. I was safe. But my arms and legs were very weak. I fell down and I was lying on the beach.

Have you ever taken a flight from Beijing Daxing International Airport (BDIA)? After opening on Sept 25, BDIA drew attention not just for its design , but also for its many high-tech facilities (设施) and services.

The new airport, seated in the southernmost part of Beijing, is made up of a main terminal (航站楼) ,a supporting service building and a parking lot.

Together, they cover an area of about 1.4 million square meters, which is equal to 63 Tian'anmen Squares, according to Beijing Review.

The new airport is expected to handle(处理) 45 million passenger trips a year by 2022 and 72 million by 2025, China Daily reported. With more runways planned, the new airport will eventually handle more than 100 million passengers each year. That's around the total population of the UK and Canada combined(总共的).

The airport has many new technologies that make it smarter and more efficient (有效率的). It is the world's first airport with a double-deck departure and arrival (双进双出) design for its terminal building.“It's more efficient for passengers than any other large airport terminal of the same size in the world," Guo Yanchi, the chief engineer in charge of construction (建造)told China Daily.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China, 86 percent of check-ins can be done through self service check in kiosks (自助值机-体机) and 76 percent of luggage can be checked automatically (自动地) with the help of self service bag-drop machines. Other technologies, such as a facial recognition (人脸识别) system, allow passengers to have a quicker check-in and boarding process.

The airport will also use a robot-operated parking system. Drivers just need to park their cars in given areas. Robots will then carry them to an empty space. When collecting their cars, drivers simply need to scan a parking ticket to find out where to collect their cars.

1What do we know about BDIA?

A.It's very large.B.It is in Beijing's city center.

C.It was designed by a Chinese architect.D.It's not completed yet.
