We cannot remember clearly since when we have started to take our mobiles to a dinner table. This happens a lot, especially when we eat out. Once a dish comes, instead of lifting our chopsticks, we take out our mobiles and click. Later, we post the photos onto microblog or WeChat, “waiting to be liked”. Then we check our mobiles from time to time during the meal to see whether we get “liked” or not. We just cannot leave our mobiles for only a meal.

Does that sound familiar to you? Do you do that often? If not, how do you feel when others do that when having dinner with you?

A recent study shows what we are used to doing is not so good. Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less satisfying. To test this, some researchers did an experiment. (Some people, before, were, take, asked, could, to, photos, enjoy food, they). It proved that the more photos they took, the less delicious the food seemed to them. So, why not stop taking photos and just enjoy the food in front of you?

Besides the scientific result, there are also some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals. After posting the photos onto the Internet, one will involuntarily (不自觉地) check his mobile many times. “Does everyone like my photos? I hope a lot of people like them!” It seems that your mobile secretly calls your name all the time, even when you are with real people.

So, next time you go out to have dinner with your family or friends, how about not taking photos of food? Let the food be delicious as it is and share your life with people around you. Trust me. It will be a wonderful time.

1People take photos of dishes and post them onto microblog or WeChat before eating.

2It makes food less delicious/satisfying.

3Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food.

4Other bad influences of taking photos before meals.

5He advises us not to take photos of food, just enjoy it.

1根据we take out our mobiles and click. Later, we post the photos onto microblog or WeChat可知,一上菜,我们就忙着拍照片、在微博上或微信上发照片。 People take photos of dishes and post them onto microblog or WeChat before eating.

2根据Spending time taking photos of food makes the food less satisfying. It makes food less delicious/satisfying.

首先看动词有四个:could,were asked,enjoy,因为could后应该用动词原形,所以could +enjoy;第二组就是were asked构成被动的形式。 Some people were asked to take photos before they could enjoy food.

4根据Besides the scientific result, there are also some other bad influences of taking photos of food before meals. Other bad influences of taking photos before meals.

5根据next time you go out to have dinner with your family or friends, how about not taking photos of food? He advises us not to take photos of food, just enjoy it.

P. I. C. K. the Right Books for You

The secret to learn how to choose the right book is simple. It’s one word you can depend on when you’re in a library or a bookstore. All you need to remember is “ P. I. C. K. “ P. I. C. K. ” stands for Purpose, Interest,Comprehend, and Know the Words.

P= Purpose. Why are you looking for a book——reading for pleasure or trying to learn something? Reading silently for yourself or reading out loud for someone else? Most often, your purpose for reading can be found with a quick answer.

I = Interest. With the many millions of books on shelves today, there must be something out there for everyone. If you are interested in cars,consider books about history of racing, race car drivers, or car design. Even if you havea short amount of time to choose books, you can determine interest by looking at the front cover, flipping through(快速翻阅)the pages to have a quick look at photos or illustrations, or reading the back cover or the chapter titles.

C = Comprehend. It’s important to choose a book right for your level or ability. How to choose such a book? If you read books at Level A, for example, you’d better not choose a book at Level D. If the book isn’t labeled(贴标签)with a level, you can open the book and choose a page——then you can decide whether the book is at a right level for you by asking yourself:

Did I understand what I just read?

Do I remember what I read?

Was I able to read most of the words?

This brings us to our final letter;

K=Know the Words. Readers should be able to understand most of the words on the page. The key is the ‘‘Five Finger Rule” : Choose a book you would like to read, look at a page in the middle and put one finger down for every word you don’t understand. The “Five Finger Rule” shows a general idea of the relationship between the number of unknown words and the difficulty

level of a book;

0 — 1 unknown word = too easy

2 — 3 unknown words=just right

4~5 unknown words = too difficult

You want to know how to choose books right for youbooks that are enjoyable, fun and exciting. P. I. C. K. is all about giving you the tools to be a strong and confident reader.

1What does “P. I. C. K. ” stand for?

2According to the passage, what is one possible purpose for reading?

3What books does the writer advise you to read if you’re interested in cars?

4What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?

5If you put three fingers down when you’re reading a page, what’s the

difficulty level of the book?
