     Snub-nosed monkeys are a group of Old World monkeys. They mainly live in Southwest China(especially Sichuan,Hubei,Yunnan,and Guizhou) and Vietnam. They get the name from the very short nose on their round face.Many Chinese people call them “golden hair monkeys ” because some of them have golden yellow hair. They grow to 51 to 83 cm tall with a tail of 55 to 97 cm long.

     Snub-nosed monkeys live in mountain forests up to 4,000 meters high. They spend most of their time in the trees. They live together in groups from 5 〜10 up to 600 members. One group don't want members of other groups come into their area. If any strange monkeys come up,they will shout at them. Sometimes the whole group will shout at the strangers with one voice.

     The food of these animals mainly includes tree leaves,young bamboos and wild fruits. At birth,a baby monkey’s hair is black. When it is young,it hardly leaves its mother,and is often carried here and there by its mother. Young monkeys become adult ones in about six to seven years. People still don't know how many years they can live up to. These animals like to look for food and play together,and take care of each other. In face of danger the young ones are usually protected by being put at the center of the group while the stronger adults go to the scene of the alarm. They have thick hair and often sleep close together to keep them warm in freezing weather. They often sleep in the lower places of the trees where it is less windy and cold.

     Snub-nosed monkeys are highly endangered because their living area is becoming smaller and smaller and their food is becoming less and less. They are the finst class (一级) national protected animals. China has already set up many protection areas to protect these lovely animals.

      A handsome young man lived with a cow,and was called Cowboy. One day,seven fairies came down to Earth to have fun. They took a bath in a lake. After the bath all of them flew back to Heaven (天宫) except the youngest one,because she couldn’t find her dress. Cowboy helped her find the dress. The fairy was so moved that she decided to stay on Earth and marry Cowboy. After they got married,the husband went out to grow plants and the wife stayed at home to weave doth (织布) every day. People gave his wife the name Weaving Girl. Two years later they had two children. They were living a happy life.

      In fact,Weaving Girl was the seventh daughter of the Emperor of Heaven. She could weave colorful clouds to make the wSky more beautiful. When the Emperor found the sky wasn't so beautiful as before,he asked Weaving Girl's grandmother to find his missing daughter and bring her back. Suddenly,a rainstorm broke out that day. Weaving Girl knew that it was her grandmother,who came here to take her back. She told her husband the truth. Then she flew away with her grandmother. Cowboy decided to look for his wife with their children.

      When he went to Heaven,the grandmother didn't want Weaving Girl to go back to Earth with her husband. She sent out seven women with their faces covered,and promised to Cowboy ,“If you recognize (认出) which one is your wife,she will go with you. ” Cowboy was stunned (愣住了) when he saw the seven women,because they were all in the same size and shape. But the two children could recognize their mother,because the relationship of mother and child’s blood can’t be cut off. However,the grandmother broke her promise and took Weaving Girl away. When Cowboy was running after them, the grandmother used her magic stick to make a river called Milky Way (银河) between the husband and wife.

      Since then,Cowboy and Weaving Girl couldn't get together. Every year,on the seventh day of the seventh month,all magpies (喜鹤) fly to the Milky Way to make the bridge for Cowboy and Weaving Girl to get their family together.
