【题目】What do you do if you are in trouble on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.

Body signals

Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training, When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means, "yes". When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means "no". If you want the pilot to know that it's safe to land, push your hands out in front of you and bend your knees. If you want to say that it's not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.

Smoke signals

The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it’s a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, that fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a tire unless you're sure that it can’t spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.

Ground-to-air signals

It's a good idea lo build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols (标记). If you can't find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are:

F "I need food and water"

II "I need medicine."

I "I am badly hurt."

X "I am unable lo move from here."

Pilots' replies

If the pilot lowers the plane's wings from side to side, this means: "message received and understood" (At night, the pilot flashes the plane's green lights.) If the pilot flies the plane in a clockwise circle, this means "message received hut not understood" (At night, the: pilot flashes the plants red lights.)

However, there is no signal which means "message not received.

【题目】Have you ever ridden a Ferris wheel lately? Can you imagine the flying feeling as you are pulled up to the top and then moved down to the bottom quickly again?

Today a Ferris wheel is usually 40 to 60 feet tall. That seems very high when you are on the top looking down. But the first Ferris wheel was 264 feet high taller than a twenty-story building! Can you imagine the view from the top of that?

The first Ferris wheel was built for the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago. The people who planned the fair were looking for an attraction that would bring people to Chicago. George Ferris handed a drawing of a giant wheel that people could ride on. At first everyone laughed at his strange idea. But Mr. Ferris did not give up and finally the idea was accepted. The ride opened in June of 1893.

Today’s Ferris wheels have 12 to 16 seats which each carry 2 or 3 people. But that first one had 36 enclosed cars each holding 60 passengers. When filled it carried 2160 people. During that summer in Chicago about 1.5 million people rode the Ferris wheel.

After the fair the ride was moved to a nearby amusement park built especially to show off the wheel. In 1904 it was moved again to St. Louis for the Louisiana Purchase Exposition. After the fair there the wheel stood unused. In 1906 it was finally sold to a company for scrap metal (废铁).

Luckily a Chicago bridge builder W.E. Sullivan figured out how to make a smaller Ferris wheel that could easily be taken apart and put together. In 1906 he started the company that still makes many of the Ferris wheels used today.

But whenever you ride one remember that it all began with George Ferris’s strange idea!

【题目】It happens every spring. Flowers come out everywhere on the same day. But how do plants know when to flower?

For years, it has been a difficult question for scientists. But a US research group may have finally answered itthe secret lies in a protein(蛋白质)called FKF1. This helps plants to know when the days become long and when they get short. Then they can tell the seasons are changing.

Researchers found the FKF1 protein when they were studying a plant called Arabidopsis(拟南芥). It is sensitive(敏感的)to sunlight, and can be made active by sunlight.

Plants produce this protein every day in the late afternoon all year. If there is no light at this time, for example in winter when the sun goes down early, the protein wont be active. But when spring comes and the days get longer, the FKF1 protein can be made active by day light and the plants know it is time to flower. If there is light in the late afternoon, plants will know that the days are getting longer and that it is the best time for flowers to come out, explained Takato Imaizumi, leader of study. But when conditions are poor for growing, such as during autumn or winter when the weather is cold and days are short, plants wont flower.

Although researchers have only studied how the FKF1 protein works in the Arabidopsis, they believe that it is the same with many other plants, including crops such as rice and wheat. This could be useful to the agricultural industry.

If we can control when flowers come out, we might be able to increase crop production, Imaizumi said.
