A.how long he came to the officerB.how could he work out the problem

C.why he was late againD.whether he can help repair the broken machine

Imagine having an ear made out of an apple. It seems like a crazy idea from a horror movie. But it could happen in the near future.

Canadian biophysicist Andrew Pelling used an apple to grow a human ear. He thinks fruit and vegetables can be used to cheaply repair human body parts in the future.

Scientists have been trying to grow organs(器官) in labs to replace our old ones. But it is a hard job. For example, liver cells(肝细胞) can grow in a lab, but the cells still need things like blood vessels(血管)to actually work. These things have to grow inside a scaffold (支架).

In the past, scientists have used man-made materials, animal parts and even dead people as scaffolds. But that has proved to be difficult and expensive.

Pelling and his team, however, found the apple to be a cheap and easy-to-use scaffold.

They first cut an apple into the shape of an ear. Then they used a special way to take out the apple's cells and make it a scaffold. The team then added human cells to the apple, and watched it grow.

“You can implant these scaffolds into the body, and the body will send in cells and a blood supply and actually keep these things alive.” Pelling said during a Ted Talk speech.

The team put the apple scaffold inside a living mouse and the mouse's cells slowly took over the pieces of apple.

Now Pelling is thinking of other fruit, plants or vegetables to use.

He says that the lower petals could be perfect for repairing skin. And asparagus(芦笋) could fix a broken spine(脊柱).

Now, Pelling and his team are trying hard to put these crazy ideas into reality.

1Pelling’s idea of man-made ear seems crazy because he used _______ as scaffolds.

A.animal partsB.dead peopleC.man-made materialsD.ordinary apples

2The underlined word “implant” in Paragraph 7 probably means _______.

A.pickB.putC.produceD.protect

3From the last three paragraphs, we can infer that Pelling will experiment with other fruit, plants or vegetables _______.

A.to make human earsB.to repair burnt skin

C.to fix a broken spineD.to make human body parts

【题目】 Some people believe that greed(贪婪) and selfishness has become the main theme of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community in order to have a better life.

In this fast –paced(快节奏的) world, many values are experiencing great changes. While people traditionally caring, sharing and generosity the most important things in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-centered.

Modern people act selfishly to survive the highly competitive world. To survive, you have to fight with whatever ways you can think of. Obviously greed and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, workers do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even if it means their workmates will lose a lot because of this. They are not born cold-blooded; it is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way because of outside influences.

To be honest, it is hard to say that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more seriously punished then. But we can’t be blind to the fact that people in the past faced less pressure compared with the modern environment.

Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a win-win relationship.
