Steve Hobbs was a soldier during the last war. Gunner Hobbs he was then. He was a tall young man and rather good-looking.

He saw the photograph in the window of a photo studio(摄影社). The girl was beautiful, very beautiful. " Looks interesting, too." Steve thought. he went into the studio.

" Good evening, sir," the photographer said. "Can I help you ?"

" Yes, " said Gunner Hobbs. He pointed to the photograph. "You can tell me the name and address of that girl."

" Oh, can I? I'm not sure, sir. It isn't my joy to…"

Steve lied to him. "It's all right, man. I know her. I mean —— I used to know her. I've been fighting a war, and I've forgotten her name. She'll be pleased to see me again."

" Oh well , all right, then. I believe you." The man looked at some information in his note book. At last he read out: " Miss Ann Trail, 29 Fairfield Road."

" That's right !" Steve cried. "Ann Traill —I remember now. She hasn't changed at all. Thanks. I'll go and see her one day."

Fifteen minutes later Steve was at the house in Fairfield Road. Ann Traill opened the door herself. She was even lovelier than in the photograph. Steve took off his cap.

He said, "You're Ann Traill, aren't you? My name is Steve Hobbs. Gunner Hobbs at the moment. There's something I want to ask you, Ann. Will you marry me?"

She looked him up and down for half a minute. Then she said, "Yes, I think I will. Come in and meet my family."
