【题目】 A famous writer -Edith Wharton

When she was born: in 1862

Why she began writing: Some people think Edith began writing because she found the people around her so boring. Others say she put pen to paper when her husband became sick and she needed something to do. But the fact is that she thought of herself as a writer when she was a child. Writing made her feel free from the control(控制) of her social class.

What she enjoyed doing: writing; designing, caring for gardens.

Her works: fifteen novels, seven novellas, eighty-five short stories and books on a number of subjects .

Her achievements(成就)

In 1899, her collection of stories The Greater Inclination appeared. When she was in London. she visited a bookstore. The storeowner, not knowing who she was, gave her the book and said to her, ”Everyone in London is talking about this book now.”

Three years later, her first novel, The Valley of Decision, was published(出版) .Three years after that, she wrote and published the novel The House of Mirth.

In 1920, she published The Age of Innocence and it won the 1921 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The novel was made into a movie in 1993. Edith died in 1937 in France.

【题目】 A blind high school student in Shanghai became famous after getting 623 points at this year’s Gaokao. The student, Wang Yun, got 127 points for Chinese, 145 for math and 144 for English. His grade was only 3 points lower than the first one in his city. And the only difference between Wang’ s test and other common students’ was that his was in Braille (盲文).
