On July2, 1937, Amelia Earhart( an American pilot) and Fred Noonan left New Guinea for Howland Island in the Pacific. This was the longest and most dangerous part of their t1around the world. Earhart had trouble soon after the plane took off. The weather was very bad, so she had to f2at 3,000 metres. Going this high, the plane used fuel quickly.

After about 20 h3, Earhart and Noonan got close to Howland Island. The island was o4about 65 miles (英里) away, but the bright sun was shining in their faces so they couldn’t see it. Near Howland, a ship was w5for the plane. Earhart contacted the ship: “We don’t have enough fuel,” she said. The ship tried to stay in touch with her b6got no answer. Finally, the ship called for help. People looked for Earhart and Noonan for days. However, they found nothing.

What happened to Amelia Earhart? No one knows for sure. D7the flight, she probably moved in the wrong direction(方向) because the sun was bright and it was d8to see. So she got lost; soon after, her plane ran out of fuel, and she died at sea. Another idea is that she survived(幸存) the plane crash(飞机失事), s9to a lonely island, and later died there. Still other think she survived the crash and secretly returned to the U.S. with a new identity(身份).

Till now, none of these i10has been proved. People are still wondering about them. (Noonan’s body has never been found either.) No matter what happened, Earhart probably died as she wished. “When I go,” she said, “I’d like best to go in my plane.”

A person has two ears but only one mouth. That means we should listen, not just speak. The word “listen” has the same letters as the word “silent(沉默)”. 1 silently is a good quality(品质) that we should have. Then why is it important to be a good listener?

When someone is under too much 2 from his work or study, he may show his poor feelings. It’s easy for him to get upset or angry. At this moment, we need to listen quietly first 3 he gets calm(冷静的). Then we may have a good talk with him. Maybe it is a good way to help him 4.

Sometimes, we may think our parents are always talking too much. But in fact, they do so because they are worried about our health or just expect to help us if we have difficulty 5 our study. If we listen carefully and patiently, our parents will feel we care about them. A loving silence is often more powerful than words.

Sometimes, we just want others to listen to us but forget to listen to others. If so, don’t be 6 when others get unhappy suddenly( 突然). That’s because you are not polite(礼貌) and you may not realize it. In order to show our respect( 尊重)for others, we’d better listen to them first. Then we can tell them 7 we are thinking.

Easier said than done. Every head is a world. So we should learn to listen with our ears, eyes and hearts as much as we can, and try to 8 ourselves good listeners from now on.

When thinking of Britain, many images come to mind. Big Ben, the Ferris wheel, red telephone boxes...and black London taxis. The taxi has an important role in London.
But what is so special about a simple taxi? First of all, the shape and style are very different from those of ordinary taxis. It looks like a half-car and half-van (半厢式货车). It has plenty of room in the back, which means it's easy for disabled people to use. And the black color makes it stand out on the road.
Besides the style of the car, taxi drivers have an important part in your travel. They have to pass a taxi driving test, and in London it is very difficult. As there are many tourists in London, drivers must know many roads by memory!
Apart from driving you to your destination, it is normal {or the driver and passenger to have a conversation. Getting a taxi involves a social space which the driver and you share. The image of a London taxi driver is one that is friendly and talkative. Most times when I get a taxi, I ask how the driver is. Then we usually talk about sports or news events.
In China, I've noticed that taxi drivers are usually quieter. Sometimes I try to speak with them in Chinese. And when I do, they usually seem friendly and open to talk. It's also a good situation to practice my Chinese!
