Hi, my name is Wang Jun. Do you want to know about my staying in America? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience here.

In China, I had English classes five times a week since Grade Five. But I didn’t know textbook English could be so different from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut. When I first studied English, I was told to say “I’m fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the USA, I found that people say “I’m good.” or “I’m tired.”

American students are hard-working like Chinese students. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student not only gets good grades, but also does a lot for the public. That is to say, they get lots of knowledge at school and learn many life skills from social （社会的） work.

An old man was going home late one night with his horse and cart after a day’s hard work. When he was not far from his house, the light on the cart went out. He tried but could not mend (修理) it. He was near his home, and so he went along the road without a light. When a policeman saw this, he stopped the old carter.

“Where is your light?” asked the policeman. “No man may take a cart along the road at night without a light. You know that. You have broken the law (法律).” “I had a light, but it has just gone out,” said the old man.

“I don’t believe that story,” said the policeman. He took out a book and got ready to write. What’s your name and where do you live?” he asked.

This year, Chongqing primary schools decide to start morning classes an hour later. This will help students feel less tired. And most primary schools will begin the first class at about 9 o’clock in the morning. The students are happy about the change.

Liu Ming told us that his classmates were excited by the news on the first day of the school. “Great! From now on we students at Hope Primary School don’t have to get up so early!” Liu said that he used to get up at 6:40 a.m. Now he can get up at 7:50 a.m. because class doesn’t start until 8:50 a.m. Wu Hong feels the same. She said the new timetable was good for her health. “I used to get up at 6:30 a.m. I had to drink coffee every night, or I would feel too sleepy to finish my homework,” said Wu Hong, “Now I can finish it without coffee, because I can sleep a little longer.”

Many teachers say the change will help students learn better. “Students used to doze（瞌睡）for the first two classes in the morning,” said Huang Shan, an English teacher at No.1 Primary School. “But now they are active and learn much better than before.”

But some parents are worried that more sleep will mean less learning. There used to be five classes in the morning. Now there are only four.

In fact, every coin has two sides. So does the change in the school timetable.
