More sleep can help improve athletes’ performance

If you’re an athlete in training, you may need more sleep.

“Just as athletes need more energy when they’re in training, they need more sleep, too.” said David Geier, a scientist from Charleston, South Carolina. “You’re pushing your body in practice, so you need more time to recover (恢复).”

Athletes in training should sleep about an hour more than usual. “You can go to sleep earlier, or take an afternoon nap (午睡),” Ceier said, “Not getting enough sleep not only makes you feel tired but also has a big influence on what’s happening inside your body.

Felicia Stoler, a sports expert in New Jersey, agrees. “A good sleep is the time when your body repairs itself,” she said. “If we don’t get enough sleep, we won’t perform well.”

Many researches also support their opinions. Experts spent several months researching the basketball team of Stanford University. During the period, the players added almost 2 hours to their usual sleeping time every night. As a result, the players increased their speeds by 5%. And they felt happier. Other researches have shown the similar results from football-players and other athletes.
