【题目】Dear Editor

I am writing with regards to the article "Is the TV Dead" that appeared in your newspaper on March 4th The author said that with the rise of the Internet the TV was becoming less and less important in our lives

I find it very difficult to agree with this view (观点). The TV is still the main way most of us get our entertainment at home It offers us the chance to see top musical artists great films and documentaries and sometimes thanks to important televised events it has the power to bring the whole nation and all ages together in a way which the Internet never could

Your article was especially critical (批判的) of the TV for the poor quality of programmes we now have It is certainly true that many of the channels offer nothing more than repeats or low budget (预算) programmes However I would argue (辩论) that the most of content on the Internet is also of questionable quality I agree that it is easy to keep uptodate with the latest news on the Internet but I'm sure most of us still enjoy sitting down to the News on TV in the evening just as much

The writer is correct in saying that the Internet has become our major source (来源) for research and I think this is its main strength However criticizing (批评) the TV for not being as good is completely unfair Information programmes like documentaries are made as entertainment not as research tools and they will continue to be popular with viewers

So I don't think the writer should be so quick to write the TV off Just the opposite I think it has many more years left in it!

Yours sincerely

Samantha Johnson

【题目】 We are told to travel the world, discover new things and meet new people. But there is one problem. Even paying for a bed for the night makes you feel as if broadening your minds requires plenty of money — and for students, that is not always possible.

The words “youth hostel” (青年旅舍) for your parents might mean smelly dormitories (寝室)with six strangers, or having to pay for messy towels, and dirty pillows. However, youth hostels nowadays — especially the ones in China — are wonderful.

In Chengdu, my friend and I were served free coffee and the people working there gave us suggestions of the best ways to visit the pandas and the best hotpot restaurants in Sichuan.

In Yangshuo, I made friends with a German and two Americans. We rented bikes from our hostel owner and rode around the city. When it rained, the hostel owner lent me his raincoat. One night the housekeeper cooked us a great meal of homemade Chinese dishes.

Never did I pay more than 50 yuan for a bed. Sometimes, even though I had booked a “dormitory”, I ended up in a private room by myself. Because these are “youth hostels”, you can meet lots of students like yourself, all of whom want to get the most out of a small budget (预算).

The best two websites for finding and booking hostels are www.hostelbooker.com and www.hostelworld.com. Not only do they allow you to organize everything online, they also give each hostel a score depending on how the guests feel when they remain there.

Travel the world, discover new things, and meet new people — all for the price of a cup of coffee? Just choose the city and now you go!
