England has roses, the Netherlands has tulips, and India has lotuses. When you think of a particular country, its national flower might come to mind.

More than 100 countries have a national flower. But China, despite many beautiful flowers, does not.

China once had national flowers. During the Qing dynasty, it was the peony (牡丹). The government of the Republic of China later changed it to the plum blossom (梅花). But after the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, a national flower was not chosen.

Debate over which flower should represent China continues today. China's two former national flowers—the peony and the plum blossom, remain as the two most popular choices.

Compared with small plum blossoms, the peony has large blossoms and vivid colors. Supporters of the peony think they represent China's continuing rise.

However, plum blossom supporters argue that the peony is often connected with chasing wealth and fame, which is not encouraged. On the contrary, the plum blossom has very noble (高洁的) qualities. It is said to be modest and persistent, as it is able to grow even during cold winters.

Some people have suggested that both flowers could be China's national flowers. One country, two flowers, you might say. China is just so big geographically, and both flowers are popular. Li Qingwei, an associate professor at Beijing Forestry University, told China Daily. So why not let both become national flowers? That would be harmonious (和谐的).

A.Different countries have different national flowers.

B.More than 100 countries have a national flower.

C.No national flower has been chosen since 1949.

2It's known from the text that the earliest national flower in China was ________.

A.during the Qing dynasty.

B.in time of the Republic of China.

C.before the Qing dynasty.

D.after the founding of PRC.

3Why do plum blossom supporters disagree that the peony is chosen as a national flower?

A.It has large blossoms and vivid colors.

B.It is able to grow even during the winter.

C.It has something to do with wealth and fame.

D.It is said to be modest and persistent.

4Which of the following can best summarize Li Qingwei’s idea?

1

During the Qing dynasty, it was the peony (牡丹).” 故选A

3

根据倒数第二段中“However, plum blossom supporters argue that the peony is often connected with chasing wealth and fame, which is not encouraged.”

根据最后一段中“China is just so big geographically, and both flowers are popular. Li Qingwei, an associate professor at Beijing Forestry University, told China Daily. So why not let both become national flowers? That would be harmonious (和谐的).”

Did you take part in a camp last summer? There are so many summer camps and not all of them are the same. To choose which camp is best for you, first you must do a bit of research.

Maybe you've never thought about it before, but every great summer camp has the same main goals—opportunitychallenge and growth. They are results that all campers are trying to achieve.

Opportunity means you can get a situation in which it is possible for you to do something special. It also makes you special because other kids don't have the same opportunity. For example, if you are interested in writing, then you can choose to join a journalism (新闻)camp. You may have the opportunity of meeting famous journalists there.

Challenge means you are given a task. You must finish the task and succeed in dealing with the challenge. Then you will have a sense of achievement.
