【题目】 Emily and Zach are confused! Their parents told them they could choose between Massachusetts and Arizona for their vacation this summer, and they think both states seem pretty amazing.

Emily has always wanted to visit Boston, the capital of Massachusetts. Zach and she both agree that walking along the Freedom Trail would be pretty great. Emily and Zach both love the beach. If they went to Massachusetts, they could spend a few days at the beaches on Cape Cod.

Zach finds learning about Native Americans extremely interesting and has always wanted to travel along the Apache Trail in Arizona. Emily is not as keen on traveling along this trail as Zach, but they both would like to visit Phoenix, the capital, and then travel to Meteor Crater. Zach learned in science class that Meteor Crater is a very huge hole. It was created when a huge object from space fell to Earth.

The only thing that Zach doesn't like in Arizona is the heat. It is very hot in this southwestern state. Massachusetts, on the other hand, is in the northeastern United States. Here, Zach and Emily and their parents could enjoy the nice weather.

How will they decide which state they should visit? That would be great if they could take two trips!

There once was a king who wanted to find the answers to what he considered the three most important questions in life. The three questions are : when is the right time for every action, who are the most important people , and what is the most important thing to do? The king consulted learned men, promising he would richly reward anyone who could answer the questions, but their answers didn’t satisfy him. In the end, he decided to visit a wise hermit who lived in the woods. The hermit would speak only with common people, so the king put on simple clothes.

He asked the wise man his three questions, but the hermit didn’t respond. Seeing how old and weak the hermit was, the king began helping him dig. Then the king carried the wounded man to Hermit’s hut and took care of him. The king was exhausted and fell asleep as well. When he awoke, he talked with the man, who said that he had wanted to kill the king but was wounded by his bodyguards. He asked for forgiveness and promised to serve the king faithfully.

Afterwards, the king went outside and repeated his questions to the hermit once more. The hermit replied, “If you had not helped me dig earlier, you would have left and been killed by the man. So, the most important man back then was me, and the most important time was when you were digging. The most important thing to do was to be kind to me. When the wounded man arrived, he was the most important person, and saving him was the most important thing. By doing so, you made peace with an enemy.”

【题目】 Some of the greatest problems we face today are the destruction ( 破 坏 ) of our environment. Brown clouds, polluted water, endangered wild animals…. these problems seem so huge.

So my family does what we can. We take cloth bags to stores instead of using plastic bags. We walk where we don't have to drive…

But does it do any good? When I am the only one in line at the market with cloth bags, am I doing any good? Does my walking to stores make any real difference to the world?

I recently learned something about flamingos(火烈鸟) which like to get together in groups of a thousand or more. Every year, when the time comes for migration(迁徙), a few of them first take off from the lake. But none of the others seem to notice. So the small group returns. However, the next day they try again. This time a few more fly along with them, but most of them still pay no attention, so they return again. They try for several times. Every time a few more birds join in but, since thousands of the others still take no notice, the great migration plan is once more stopped.

Then one day something changes. The same small group of birds once again starts flying and a small number more join in just as before. then more. Finally, they all take flight and the migration really begins. What a spectacular sight it must be — thousands of flamingos taking off into the sky at once !
