I watched my mother flying out to get me food. My sister already flew out into the world, too. She flew just like my mother did. I didn't ever want to leave the nest. My wings were nothing like my sister’s. Mine were brown and small, and I just knew they were too weak to fly.

My mother got back and fed me. After I ate, she looked at me and said, “you're old enough now, and it is time for you to fly.”

I told her I felt bad. She said that she could wait until the next morning. But then I would have to go. I stayed close to her in the nest and tried to go to sleep.

When the sun came up the next day, I tried to look small. I knew that birds should fly away and leave the nest, but that didn't mean I could do it.

My mother asked me to watch and learn. I had watched her fly away so many times before. When I stood in the nest watching her, I was scared.

Then something happened. I fell out of the nest! I put my wings out and I was able to fly! I shouted as loudly as I could. They worked! They were strong enough to fly after all! They were wonderful. My mother flew back to the nest and watched me fly and shouted happily.
