【题目】Do you know something about tree rings? Do you know they can tell us what the weather was like, sometimes even hundreds of years ago?

A tree will grow well in a climate with lots of sunshine and rainfall. And little sunshine or rainfall will limit the growth of trees by studying the tree rings. For example, to find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we’re sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year. If it is near to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad.

Tree rings are important not only for studying the history of weather but also for studying the history of man. Many centuries ago, there lived a lot of people at a place in New Mexico. But now you can find only sand there-no trees and no people. What happened?

A scientist studied the rings of dead trees there. He found that the people had to leave because they had cut down all the trees to make fires and buildings. As all the trees had gone, the people there had to move.

【解析】

试题分析:这篇文章主要告诉我们树的年轮能帮助我们研究天气与人的历史。树的年轮能告诉我们气候是好还是坏,在好的气候下树的年轮间隔大。

【1B细节理解题。据文章If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we’re sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year. If it is near to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad.可知,根据这篇文章,树的年轮能告诉气候是好还是坏。故正确答案为B

【2A判断推理题。根据For example, to find out the weather of ten years ago, count the rings of a tree from the outside to the inside. If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we’re sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year. If it is near to the eleventh ring, then the climate that year was bad.可知,如果你想查出20年前的天气,你应该研究第20道年轮。故该题正确答案为A。

【3B猜测词义题。根据第二段可知,划线单词“limit”的意思是限制。即该题选B。

【4B判断推理题。根据If the tenth ring is far from the eleventh ring, then we’re sure that it was sunny and rainy most of that year. 可知,在不好的气候下树的年轮长得间隔大,故B项内容错误。

第一节:阅读短文,回答问题。

Red squirrels used to be a common sight in British forests and countryside. But there are fewer than 140,000 red squirrels left now and most of them are in Scotland. However, grey squirrels (introduced from North America) are now so common that many people dislike them. They can be legally(合法的)trapped and destroyed.

On first sight, the two types of squirrel are similar. They both have a long tail, which helps the squirrel to balance when jumping from tree to tree, and the same large eyes, small ears and powerful back legs. However, the grey squirrel has a clear physical advantage over the red. The red squirrel has a head-and-body length of 19 to 23 centimeters, a tail length of 15 to 20 centimeters and a body weight of 250 to 340 grams. Compared to this, the grey squirrel is a larger animal. The head and body measures between 23 and 30 centimeters long and the tail is between 19 and 25 centimeters long. Adult grey squirrels are heavier, weighing between 400 and 600 grams. This size allows them to store more fat and helps them to survive a hard winter, which would be fatal(致命的)to their smaller cousins .

So why are red squirrels losing out in competition with grey squirrels? Size is one factor, but there are others. Red squirrels live high up in trees, while grey squirrels spend more of their time on the ground. This means any loss of forests greatly influences the red squirrel population. Another reason for the grey squirrel’s success is its ability to use food provided by people. Like the fox, the grey squirrel can survive in towns and cities. The other problem for the red squirrel is disease. Both squirrels carry a certain virus. While this doesn’t seem to attack grey squirrels, it is fatal to red squirrels.

【1Which are introduced from North America, red squirrels or grey squirrels?

【2What helps the squirrel to balance when jumping from tree to tree?

【3How much do adult grey squirrels weigh at most?

【4Who are the “smaller cousins” mentioned in the second paragraph?

【5There are four reasons why red squirrels are losing out in competition with grey squirrels. Please list TWO of them.(每条不得超过4个单词)
