Along with the Great Pyramid(金字塔) of Giza in Egypt, the Great Sphinx is one of the greatest and most studied monuments(纪念碑) of human history.

Carved(雕刻) from a single piece of stone of hundreds of tons, the Sphinx is the head of a man resting on the body of a lion.

The nose, eyes and ears have all been carved in the terrific proportions(比例). That's not easy for an object 180 metres long, 64 metres high and 35 metres wide.

No one knows what tools were used to carve the stone, when this was done, or by whom. The Egyptians wrote very little about the building of the Sphinx.

There are basically two schools of thought about how it was built.

No one knows what the Sphinx looked like when it was first finished because both natural erosion(侵蚀) and damage(破坏) done by man have changed its shape.

Many earlier pictures of the Sphinx show it with wings(翅膀), the body of a lion and ox(公牛), and the face of a man. Today only the man and the lion can be seen.

To this day, people can't agree with each other on the true role(作用) of the Sphinx.

Spain is famous for its tomato festival, called La Tomatina. It happens in a small town Hanoi on the last Wednesday of August every year. From theback of the large trucks, a great town band start to throw tomatoes at others. Then the crowds fight back, throwing the tomatoes at anything and anyone. Soon the streets are in the sea of red tomato juice.
Everyone is supposed to obey a small number of rules: You must squash (压烂) the tomato before throwing it and you are allowed to throw nothing but tomatoes.
It is usually over in less than half an hour. Everyone then sets off to the river to clearup. Sounds like fun!

Throughout history, people have been interested in knowing how language first began, but no one knows exactly where or how this happened. However, we do know a lot about languages, the language of today and also the languages of earlier times. There are probably about three thousand languages in the world today. Chinese is the language with the most speakers. English, Russian and Spanish are also spoken by millions of people. On the other hand, some languages in the world have less than one hundred speakers.

There are several important families of languages in the world. For example, most of the languages of Europe are in one large family called Indo-European. The original language of this family was spoken about 4,500 years ago. Many of the present-day languages of Europe and India are modern forms of the language of 4,500 years ago.

Languages are always changing. The English of today is very different from the English of 500 years ago. In time, some even die out completely. About 1,000 years ago, English was a little known relative of German spoken on one of the borders of Europe.

If a language has a number of speakers, or if it is very old, there may be differences in the way it is spoken in different areas. That is, the language may have several dialects. Chinese is a good example of dialect differences. Chinese has been spoken for thousands of years by many millions of people. The differences between the dialects of Chinese are so great that speakers of Chinese from some parts of China can’t understand speakers from other parts.
