One of my patients, a successful businessman, tells me that before he fell ill he wasn't happy. Happiness was "having the cookie". Only if you had the cookie could things be good.

Unluckily, the cookie kept changing. Some of the time it was money, sometimes power, sometimes fancy things.

A year and a half after his diagnosis(Õï¶Ï) of cancer, he sits in my office shaking his head. "It's like I stopped learning how to live after I was a kid. When I give my son a cookie, he is happy. If I take the cookie away or it breaks, he is unhappy. But he is 2 years old and I am 43. It has taken me this long to understand that the cookie will never make me happy for long," he says, "The minute you have the cookie, you start to worry about someone trying to take it away from you."

My patient laughs and says cancer has changed him. For the first time he is happy. No matter if his business is doing well or not, no matter if he wins or loses at golf. "Two years ago, cancer asked me, 'What is really important?' Well, life is important¡ªlife with the cookie, life without the cookie. Happiness doesn't have anything to do with the cookie; it has something to do with being alive," he pauses thoughtfully, "I guess life is the cookie."

What is the most stressful thing in school? It is probably exams.Exams can put us under a lot of pressure. But some students do well under pressure£¬while others feel terrible. So£¬why do some students perform better under stress?

It all comes down to dopamine(¶à°Í°·)£®Dopamine is a chemical(»¯Ñ§ÎïÖÊ) in our brain that sends signals(ÐźÅ) to our body.It has many important roles£ºinfluencing memory£¬attention and how we learn. Our brains work best when there is a balance of dopamine ¡ª not too much or too little.

´óÄÔͨ¹ýÁ½ÖÖ·½Ê½¿ØÖƶà°Í°·¡£It either takes out dopamine quickly£¬or gradually.Exam success can be connected to how fast dopamine goes back to a balance.

What happens when we take an exam? If you become stressed£¬your brain will start to overload(³¬¸ººÉ) on dopamine. It is like a cup overflowing with water. The quicker you can go back to a balance of dopamine£¬the quicker you will concentrate£¬helping you perform better on a test.

Scientists found that£¬during a test£¬people who slowly got back to a balance of dopamine scored 8 percent lower. That's the difference between a good mark and a bad mark.

But don't fear£¬there is some good news.The__study__also__found__that__the__more__practice__you__get£¬the__less__stressed__you'll__be.So£¬it turns out that practice really does make perfect.
