【题目】 I was jogging with my dog this morning when I saw John at a street corner. He was sitting on a bike with one of his feet on the ground. “He’s waiting for someone,” I thought. John and I were both in the ninth grade. He was a basketball player on our school team and was very popular with many girls. But I never talked to him before. He was not my type.

John saw me, too. He smiled. For a moment I thought he was smiling at someone else. But he was not. “Hi, Mary,” he said to me. “You have a cute little dog.” I smiled but did not say anything, because I did not know what to say. “I’m here waiting for you. Would you ... would you like to go to the movies with me? “ he asked. I was very surprised. I never thought he would do this, and I never thought about going out with him.

I said “No”, of course. But he seemed nice and friendly. Maybe I would go to watch him play basketball someday.

There is an English saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Until recently, few people took the saying seriously. Now, however, doctors have begun to look into laughter and the influences it has on the human body. They have found that laughter can really make people healthier.

Tests were carried out to study the influences of laughter on the body. People watched funny films while doctors checked their heart, blood pressure, breathing and muscles. It was found that laughter has similar influences to physical exercise. It increases blood pressure, the heart beating and breathing. It also works several groups of muscles in the face, the stomach, and even the feet. If laughter exercises the body, it must be beneficial (有益的).

Other tests have shown that laughter appears to be able to reduce pain on the body. In one test doctors produced pain in groups of students who listened to different radio programmes. The reason why laughter can reduce pain seems to be that it helps to produce a kind of chemical in the brain which reduce both stress and pain.

As a result of these discoveries, some doctors in the United States now hold laughter clinics (诊所), in which they try to improve their patients’ condition by encouraging them to laugh. Because of good influences, such clinics are very popular with all kinds of patients. Doctors have found that even if their patients do not really feel like laughing, making them smile is enough to produce beneficial influences similar to those caused by laughter.

Since laughter is so effective, try to laugh as much as you can. Believe it will do much good to your health. If you are not used to laughing in front of others, you can also smile as often as possible to others because it can have almost the same influence.
