"Chage and Aska" is one of Japan's most successful singing groups. Chage and Aska began making
music together in 1979. Now, more than 20 years and 200 songs later, they are still popular in Japan
and around the world.
Chage (real name: Shuji Shibata) and Aska (real name: Shigeaki Miyazaki) first met in high school. In
1979, they entered the Yamaha Popular Song Contest. They won the grand prize (大奖). That year,
their group "Chage and Aska" was born.
Their most successful year was 1991. Their album Tree sold 2. 5 million copies in Japan. The single
from that album, Say Yes, sold three million copies. That year, they won six Japan Golden Disc awards,
including the best album.
The band is also popular outside Japan. The tickets to their concerts in other Asian countries usually
sell out. In 1996, they became the first Asian group to give a live concert on MTV "Unplugged". Many
Asian singers, like Sally Yeh (叶倩文)and Andy Lau (刘德华), like to perform Chage and Aska's songs.
For the group's 15th anniversary (周年纪念), a group of American singers released an album of Chage
and Aska's songs.
