25、Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you “What is the most important thing in your life?”, maybe you will say “Computers and the Internet”.
The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today, computers are getting smaller, and smaller, but they work faster and faster. What can computers do? A writer has said, “People can’t live without computers today.”
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, send e-mails, do some shopping, play games or make friends.
Young men, especially the middle school students like the Internet very much. They often go into the Internet bars as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don’t know their names, ages and sex(性别). They are so interested in making the “unreal friends” that they can’t put their heart into study. Some of them play the games in the Internet bars all day and all night. Many of them can’t catch up with others in many subjects because of that.
Now the government has done many things. Some gangster Internet bars(黑网吧)have been banned(取缔). But that’s not enough. The teachers and parents are still worrying about their students and children.

24、We’re all nice to our friends and family members. When they are in need, we help them. If they ask for something, we give it to them.
We should also be kind and polite to strangers. How can we do that? It’s easy. If a man drops something, pick it up for him. If a woman is carrying a bag with both hands, open the door for her. When people want to cross the street, stop your bicycle, motorcycle, or car and let them cross.
In many big cities, people on the street are rude to each other. They walk around with serious expressions on their faces. Car drivers don’t stop for people crossing the street.
All of these things affect the quality of life in our cities. We need to try harder to treat each other better, like part of a big community. That way, big cities can be like big neighborhoods, with people treating each other like friends and neighbors.
If we can be kind to just a few more people a day, more and more people will be nice to each other. Our cities and towns will be better places. Then everyone will be like one big family.

23、Rivers are one of our most important natural resources. Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeastern Asia. The greatest of all for navigation, however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles up it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate(灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.
However, large cities and industries that are located on rivers often cause problems. As the cities grow in size and industry increases, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits of these natural resources.
