5、Years ago, when I started looking for my first job, wise advisers urged, "Barbara. Be enthusiastic! Enthusiasm will take you further than any amount of experience."

How right they were. Enthusiastic people can turn a boring drive into an adventure, extra work into opportunity and strangers into friends.

"Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm, wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson. It is the paste that helps you hang in there when the going gets tough. It is the inner voice that whispers, I can do it! " when others shout, "No, you can't."

It took years and years for the early work of Barbara McClintock, a geneticist (遗传学家) who won the 1983 Nobel Prize in medicine, to be generally accepted. Yet she didn't let up on her experiments. Work was such a deep pleasure for her that she never thought of stopping

Author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, "Years wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul."

Enthusiastic people also love what they do, regardless of money or title or power. If we cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can treat it as a part-time interest, like the head of state who paints, the nun (修女) who runs marathons, the official who handcrafts (手工制作)  furniture.

We can't afford to waste tears on "might-have-beens". We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after "what-can-be".

We need to live each moment wholeheartedly, with all our senses --- finding pleasure in the fragrance of a back-yard garden, the crayoned (蜡笔的) picture of a six-year-old, the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. It is such enthusiastic love of life that puts a sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our steps and smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.

    A. No one can achieve great success without enthusiasm.

    B. Enthusiasm will take a person further than any amount of his experience.

4、Just five one-hundredths of an inch thick, light golden in color and with a perfect "saddle curl (卷)," the Lay's potato chip seems an unlikely weapon for global control. But its maker, Frito-Lay thinks otherwise.” Potato chips are a snack food for the world," said Salman Amin, the company's head of global marketing. Amin believes there is no comer of the world that can resist the attemptation of a Frito-Lay potato chip.

Frito-Lay is the biggest snack maker in America owned by PepsiCo. And accounts for over half of the parent company's $3 billion annual profits. But the U.S. snack food market is largely flooded, and to grow the company has to look overseas.

Its strategy rests on two beliefs: first a global product offers economies of scale (规模) with which local brands cannot compete. And second, consumers in the 21st century are drawn to "global" as a concept. "Global" does not mean products that are intentionally known as American, but ones that consumes --- especially young people ---  see as part of a modem, innovative (创新的) world in which people are linked across cultures by shared beliefs and tastes. Potato chips are an American invention, but most Chinese, for instance, do not know that Frito-Lay is an American company. Instead, Riskey, the company's research and development head, would hope they associate the brand with the new world of global communications and business.

With brand sense an essential factor, Riskey ordered a redesign of the Frito-Lay logo (标识).The logo, along with the company's long-held marketing image of the "irresistibility" of its chips would help make the company's global expansion easy.

The senior managers acknowledge that they try to swing national eating habits to a food created in America. but they deny(拒绝) that amounts to economic imperialism. Rater, they see Frito-Lay as spreading the benefits of free enterprise across the world. "We're making products in those countries, we're adapting them to the tastes of those countries, building businesses and employing people and changing lives," said Steve Reinemund, PepsiCo's chief manager.

    D. people the world over enjoy eating their company's potato chips

2. What do we learn about Frito-Lay from Paragraph 2?

    A. Its products use to be popular among overseas consumers.

    B. Its expansion has caused fierce competition in the snack marker.

    C. It gives half of its annual profits to its parent company.

    D. It needs to turn to the word market for development.

3. One of the assumptions on which Frito-Lay bases its development strategy is that ________.

    A. consumers worldwide today are attracted by global brands

    B. local brands cannot compete successfully with American brands

    C. products suiting Chinese consumers' needs bring more profits

    D. products identified as American will have promising market value

4. Why did Riskey have the Frito-Lay logo redesigned?

    A. To suit changing tastes of young consumers.

    B. To promote the company's strategy of globalization.

    C. To change the company's long-held marketing image.

    D. To compete with other American chip producers.

5. Frito-Lay's chief manager claim that the promoting of American food in the international market ________.

     A. won't affect the eating habits of the local people

     B. will lead to economic imperialism

     C. will be in the interest of the local people

     D. won't spoil the taste of their chips

3、"Fen students have stopped complaining about gas prices. Instead, they're competing in a nationwide contest to redesign the cars. Final competitors were chosen from a field of 60 applicants.

"The schools were selected to find technology that will help our country reach the needs for energy sources, so we don't have to depend on other countries to provide fuel." Pickering said. He is vice chairman of the US House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee. The teams received $10,000 and a Chevrolet Equinox which would be used as a starting place for modifications. Each team can also get $25,000 in parts and software from GM and other sponsors. The cars will be taken to the GM proving grounds for a national competition. It's the finale(结束曲) of a three-year competition.

In the first year, students designed and worked out their plans. "At the end of the first year, our plans for the hybrid (混合动力系统) were approved and we received our own Chevrolet Equinox to begin construction." said Amanda McAlpin, leader of the outreach team.

In the second year, the students' goal is for their hybrid to exceed the factory Equinox's fuel efficiency by 50 percent. "Our goal is to place in the top five but increase in the areas we lacked in." McAlpin said, "If we can maintain this strategy, we should be able to obtain our goal."

In the final competition this year, GM technicians would examine the cars to approve the safety and make sure they meet all contest rules. "We would like to be in the top half of each event, but they are all different. Every team has their own strategy to win." said a computer engineering major.

"By hosting the competition, GM really gets the cream of the crop (优秀毕业生) from the top engineering schools across the country." McAlpin said, "Many of our recent graduates who have worked on the car have received jobs with GM." And Pickering agreed. "Their brainpower will give us firepower and horsepower for the future."

2、Doctors in Britain are warning of an obesity time bomb, when children who are already overweight grow up. So, what should we do? Exercise more? Eat less? Or both? The government feels it has to take responsibility for this expanding problem.

The cheerful Mr Pickwick, the hero of the novel by Charles Dickens, is seen in illustrations as someone who is plump --- and happy. In 18th century paintings beauty is equated(使等同) with rounded bodies and soft curves. But nowadays being overweight is seen as indicating neither a cheerful character nor beauty but an increased risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

So what do you do? Diet? Not according to England's chief medical officer, Sit Liam Donaldson. He says that physical activity is the key to reduce the risks of obesity, cancer and heart disease. And the Health Secretary John Reid even said that being inactive is as serious a risk factor in heart disease as smoking.

So, having bought some cross trainers how much exercise should you do? According to Sir Liam Donaldson, at least 30 minutes of moderate activity five days a week. Is going to the gym the answer? Luckily for those who think that running machine are boring, the Health Development Agency believes that physical activity that fits into people's lives may be more effective. They suggest taking the stairs rather than the lift, walking up escalators, playing active games with your children, dancing or gardening. And according to a sports psychologist. Professor Biddle, gyms "are not making the nation fit", and may even cause harm.

There's new scientific evidence that too much exercise may actually be bad for you. Scientists at the University of Ulster have found that unsuitable exercise releases dangerous free radicals that can adversely affect normal function in unfit people. The only people who should push their bodies to that level of exercise on a regular basis are trained athletes.

So, should we forget about gyms and follow some expert's advice to reduce sedentary activities and increase exercise in our daily life? After all, getting off the bus a stop early and walking the rest of the way can't do any harm! One final thought. How come past generations lacked gym facilities but were leaner and fitter than people today?

22、With big handbags becoming a key fashion accessory (配件) for working women, health experts are warning they can also become a key health concern.

Bags for women have become bigger and heavier as designers combine briefcases with handbags and straps have become longer, resulting in many users complaining of neck, shoulder and back problems.

"I see so many women with neck pains and headaches and what I usually do is look for their purse and pick it up," said Jane Sadler, a family practice physician at Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas. "We take it over to the scale and weigh it and usually they're anywhere from 7 to10 pounds...We're really going to see women with more and more problems later on if we continue the big purse craze."

William Case, a physical therapist (临床医生) in private practice in Houston, Texas, urged designers "to place a cute, educational caution tag (标签) on all bags to inform of potential neck and shoulder dangers." Above all, he recommended correct posture while carrying big purses, keeping the head and shoulders upright. Patients should also frequently change the size and weight of purses carded.

"The extra-large purses are quite phenomenal. They look beautiful when the women wear them, but I don't know how aware they are of the potential problems," Case said.

Placing objects on one shoulder was one of the least efficient (有效率的) ways of carrying a load, according to a professor from Cornell University in New York State. "This causes a great imbalance," he said. "If a big bag is a fashion accessory, then occasional and symbolic use is fine. If not, then keep it light."
